Unfortunately there was a constant hum when I didn't touch metal , there was also an upward neck tilt(which shouldn't be there on a neckthrough) and it made the action difficult to be low enough to my tastes. Had to send it back and got a partial refund.

Trust me we all suck. Most people didn't even notice your mistakes. First gig is always a weird experience. Practice, practice and practice more.

Went boutique got disapointed. It hummed like crazy, it was a neck through with a tilt but not in the right direction (instead of slightly downward it was upward) couldn't get a decent action. There was definitely a shielding problem and a lutherie mess which was unacceptable on a 4000 dollars...

Lack of steadyness(if that's a word) in one's playing can be fixed with compressors but nothing beats hard work and technique. Unplugg that multieffect, lower the volume of your amp when you work so you can hear every dynamic variation due to your choice or to the fact you didn't play that note...

Well...you'll find better sounding basses with great feel and maybe less artistic look. But great sound and great feel is what we're all looking for in the end...and most of the time it means selling the boutique basses and get a (modern or vintage) jbass or pbass fender or another brand because...

I grew up playing bass in church too I know what you mean. Most gospel or even ccm bass players invest in very expensive boutique instruments, then I saw Sharay Reed killing it on a jazz bass... That was it lol.

Yes it does. But it makes more difference between maple and rosewood than between rosewood and ebony. I'd also say than the clear finish coat on the maple fingerboards makes even more of a difference...
