Played my vintage P bass with flats through a 2x10 cab recently and was impressed by the tight mids and punch. Does this mean out there in the audience my bass tone is kicking harder than if I was using a bigger speaker array? I asked around afterwards but could'nt get much sense out of anyone..lol

Yeah roots people...roots. If your not sure of a line then just play sparingly a single or double note root. It'll usually be good enough to prevent any oinkers that might grate on the audience. Mind you, there'll always be someone out there who will notice your economic note delivery.......

Probably alder, even though the grain looks prominent. Whats the weight?.. though thats not really conclusive. I had a 76 natural ash P bass that was wonderfully light with very prominent grain. My current 71 S/B P is quite a bit heavier with hardly any grain which would suggest Alder.
