This really depends on what kind of budget you have. If you're looking for a bass preamp which satisfies those with a lower budget, the Hartke Bass Attack 2 or MXR M81 will provide a good enough clean preamp boost. Otherwise, potentially take a look at the Gallien-Krueger PLEX...

Interesting how no-one is really talking about the little MXR units, such as the MXR M87; Or even the Seymour Duncan studio bass. I've got the MXR M87 unit, as I found it through sustainpunch's bass compressor article which shows the top 8 compressor pedals... Would be useful for any noobies...

No you don't need to spend a lot of money; for example the TC Electronic SpectraComp is less than $100 and gets some good reviews. I don't personally own this pedal, but do some research and find out for yourself :)

I personally use the MXR M87 processor pedal, it's lightweight, durable and packs enough high quality compression when I play live, so you can hear the bass in the mix. I found it through this website here, advising on the best bass compressor pedals : SustainPunch.com
