Don't know if it makes that much difference, but on pianos, the octaves are slightly "stretched" to compensate for the strings not having perfect integral harmonics.

If I had money to burn, I would have a Steinberger Synapse 5-string fretless, but will have to make do with a defretted Steinberger Spirit 5-string I picked up last year. Tried ground wound strings but went back to round wound. Still dreaming of getting an unlined fretless and headless...

Have had a fretless bass for over a year now, and have been practicing singing along with it. Like to play melodic bass lines which are different from the singing, pretty much singing "over the top" of my bass playing. Learning polyrhythms was quite useful in this.
