Tone or Technique : most important for you?

If the role of the bass in modern music is to link the rhythm of the drums and the harmony of the guitar/keys/voice/whatever, then homogeneity with the sound of the harmonic components and technical proficiency to lock in with the drums is necessary to fill this role. It's like saying would you...

    building a funky groove

Listen to the drummer. Great basslines are great because they work with the rest of the rhythm section to make lines and phrases that compliment each other. You can play something undeniably funky but if the drummer isn't having it you won't get the full effect. Specifically try and lock in with...

    What's your "White Whale" bass?

A fretless Victor Bailey 5 strung E-C. I played a 4 string version in a guitar shop in Austin for about 3 hours until the owner politely asked me to leave. It was hands down the best bass I have ever had the pleasure to play. It sounded as good as it looked, and played like it sounded. I came...

Bass players totally uninterested in basses

Most of us drive cars, but many of us are totally disinterested with the finer bits of car information, the minor differences between how different tread styles handle, or appreciating 6 extra horsepower, or even smaller minutia of mechanics that I don't understand. Gearheads will stare at us...

The more I look at basses...

Build it yourself. You will get EXACTLY what you want and get out EXACTLY what you put into it. It really tests your devotion as a player and a craftsman.

As someone who goes to UT, I think my next purchase may be one of those in "Not Quite Burnt Orange".

Let The Pinkness Begin a USA Musicman Sub Refinish

I actually lost my breath a bit when I saw that. GORGEOUS finish work. And it looks even better on that slab body. Love it.

How many people actually set up their own instruments and get professional results?

Being the son of a grease monkey and being a generally "do-it-yourself" person, I have done my own setups since I started playing except for one occasion. It was for a bone nut on my Wunkay. The guy that did it had owned his shop for upwards of 10 years, but managed to make a nut almost worse...

Mid 60s? Gibson EB-3(PICS) would you make an Offer

Fix it yourself. Save the $500 and learn some skills while you're at it. The worst thing that can happen is you have a bass that is still (as opposed to newly) non-functioning.

    I just bought a rickenbacker 4003 and i think i noticed a flaw

Even if it was a flaw I'd keep it. I bet it makes it that much more comfortable to play, with and even softer angle on your manly (or ladylike) bits.

    Quit my college jazz band...

Sight reading takes a lot of practice. I suppose you've gathered that. I used to be in the same position as you. First day of jazz band in high school, I was handed a big black book with 55 charts to sightread. It was painful, maybe even excruciating, especially because we ran through 3 charts a...

Can we please stop using "guitard"?

The one argument I have against many PC folks is their insistence on banning words. People have free will to do whatever they please and should be given free reign to do so. Whether or not a person uses that gift for offensive words should be and is up to them. While I vehemently oppose all...

i need a good cheep interface/software for simple recordings

If you want padded input, there are several super cheap DI boxes on amazon that have -20 or -40 dB attenuation. That could solve your clipping issue, then you could buy whichever input you could afford.
