Gig Bag Vs. Hard Shell Case

I do, but not much. Most gig bags I've use have not been good, but a few were good. So you're right, maybe I shouldn't go so far as to call them crappy. Any good ones you know of?

Gig Bag Vs. Hard Shell Case

Gig bags are cheap but crappy, whereas hard cases are perfect but expensive. If you have the money go for a hard case, I got a hard Road Runner case for $80 a while back. But if you want a soft gig bag, make sure you get a good quality one. They're not very protective in general, but they're not...

Who was the player(s) that made you want to play bass?

It was John Paul Jones for me. I used to play guitar in elementary school, but I never enjoyed it much. I had one person recommend bass to me. I wasn't too hooked on the idea until I heard the bass line in "Dazed and Confused." That was the song that made me pick up my first bass years ago, so...

Are P Basses really better than J Basses for studio recording?

I would absolutely recommend you to get a precision bass, I prefer those over jazz personally. But don't necessarily do it to replace your J bass (unless you don't want it anymore). They're both good for different things, and neither one records better than the other. It just depends on your...

    Singing over complicated basslines

In my band I'm taking both bass and lead vocals. At first, I felt the same way as you. I would look in awe at people like Lemmy Kilmister, Geddy Lee, and especially Mark King (bloody beast that man!). But in the end, I refuse to dumb down a bass line just to make it easier to sing over, I want...

    Gecko 6 Neck

Has anyone used the Gecko 6 necks from Warmoth before? How are they? I'm considering upgrading the neck on my 6 string SX Ursa. There is no problem with the neck, in fact I find it comfortable and easy to play, it's just because I want a 35 inch scale. How easy does the neck play, and how heavy...

    Cheap but good Acoustic Basses?

I got a really nice acoustic bass for just $145. It plays well, sounds great, has reasonable action for an acoustic bass (though maybe a bit on the high side), and really holds its own unplugged with acoustic guitars (not louder obviously, but just loud enough). Also, this is hardly too...

    [NBD] Sterling MusicMan Ray 4

Did you change the pickups as well? Others have told me that changing/removing the preamp helps, but they changed the pickup beforehand.

Really? Because it seems like an issue with these instruments in general. I actually had another thread where I complained about the overheating, and it seems like a lot of people with this model have had the same issue.

    [NBD] Sterling MusicMan Ray 4

Active, I suspect. On these models, the pickup is passive and the controls are active, so I think the active controls overheat really fast. I'm not fully certain, but that's my impression.

    [NBD] Sterling MusicMan Ray 4

I got one of those myself three years ago. I still really love it, the fretboard is really comfortable and the construction of the instrument is great, and (as you said) mildly better than other budget models. But one problem I've noticed as of late is that the output is just too hot and...

Need Advice - Sterling by MusicMan SUB

Thanks for all your advice, guys. I think I'm going to take @eccles77 plan and just convert the bass to being fully passive. As it is, my preamp is pretty crappy, so might be worth the service. I know @nolezmaj mentioned the pickup is the problem, but how essential is it to replace my pickup...

I actually lowered the pickup already. It's a little better, but a bit hard to adjust to since I'm used to resting my thumb on the pickup. Maybe I'll invest in a thumb rest if I don't get a new pickup.

I did lower the pickup already and it's a little better, but like you said, it's less comfortable. I primarily play finger style and I like to rest my thumb on the pickup. Ah, good to know, and I'm glad we agree it's a great bass. I'll bear in mind your advice, thanks.

Need Advice - Sterling by MusicMan SUB

I have tried with multiple batteries, jacks, and amps, but not cables. I've only really used two or three cables. But I'm not sure if that would make all the difference.
