This is the first guitar I am picking up used, bass or otherwise. What should I look for when I pick it up, what should I check, how can I tell if its been abused? Please help. I leave in 2 hours.

Amen! You get what you pay for. You can say that with a great bassist, it doesnt matter, but all the greats i know aren't playing squiers.

I think the most important thing to remember here is that its not just about trusting a name. No one could make claims that a company gets it right 100% of the time. Each bass is going to be different, and you need to inspect the quality of a bass before buying it. (that goes for guitars too)...

I am going to go meet someone this weekend to look at a 2-month old Highway 1 jazz bass. Serial number Z7148199 I assume this was made in 2007. I will be paying 525 and I think that is a fair price, but a buddy of mine says its too low. I'm not a bass expert, its for my brother to upgrade...
