Pictured is a Japanese Atlansia bass. Is it just me or is the thumb rest brilliant? It would basically feel like a fifth string for your thumb to rest on to facilitate playing the E string with your fingers, and you could rest your hand anywhere up or down the strings. Notice how its distance...

Thank you everyone for the wonderful advice! I'll hunt for an old Peavey and look into splitting. Re: swartzfeger: I'm concerned with gigs, not recording for the time being. It's that exact quirky angle that's inspiring me to pick up the bass guitar. It's just perfect (in my opinion).
