for exclusively frettless player (must exist some where :-))

hmm, I don't have any choice but to use frettless for everything now because I own one bass and I defretted it myself earlier this week. Still, I love the sound of it and for some reason I can still slap and pop and it sounds good! sod everyone else, make your own sound!

When does a bass become something else?

a bass is a bass because it covers the "bass" end of the sound spectrum. If you have an 11 string bass, it is really a "tennor, baritone, bass guitar" thats what i think anyway :)

Amazing looking bass that sounded/played poorly?

I'm guessing if you buy a bass over the internet on looks, you're not going to do it blind - so you'll get info on it before you get it. And also, if it plays like a bag of nails, it doesnt mean you can't sell it on to somebody else. There must be hundreds of spud bases floating around on the...

FRETLESS buzz on 3rd and 5th ?? need help

whenever you buy a new bass you should say to the sales assistnat "I'm only interested in buying this if it can have a free set up" they always say yeah, and you get a professional set up for nothing, and if it buzzes after that - it is their fault and they have to re do it. To me though...

Since When Can Any Guitarist Can Play Bass?

Guitarists who play bass always use a pick. Bassists who only play bass always use their fingers. I don't want to start an argument but - if you use a pick you are no better than a failed guitarist. (I am being a little sarcastic here) The kid was a drummer - drummers don't...

    Defretting ?

well, thank you to everyone on here, I started reading this thread yesterday - after i noticed one of the frets were loose, so i pulled it out no problem, then read how to do it properly. I have followed the instructions so far, and am in the final stages of lacquering the neck with some...

Top bassists who use a pick

without this turning into a "fingers are better than picks" thread: Flea sometimes uses a pick. Jaco never did. I use a pick in some songs, and in others I use my fingers. The reason why bassists (die hard bassists) say that picks are evil is because usually in popular bands the bassist...

    Your pearls of wisdom

my pearl of wisdom is this: If you have access to a tape recorder/multitrack/dictaphone and you are getting frustrated with how you are progressing on the bass or with a certain technique. Record yourself, keep practicing and listen back to the recording in a months' time. You will (or...

I'm a brand new bassist! HELP!

if your arm is going dead alter the strap length. Some people can play very high up and others very low down. Find what is comfortable for you and you shouldn't have a dead arm, or hurting wrist.

    Sandberg Basses?

My local guitar shop in Birmingham UK are very honest about they're guitars and basses, and all of the bassist there have obvioulsy had a lot of experience in what they sell. The one of them has had Stingrays, Fenders, Laklands and he now owns 3 Sandbergs. The reason I like them so much is...

Going from 4 to 5 (merged threads)

I plan to get my first five string soon, so I am currently going thru the theory in my head as to how to play the songs from the band. I have decided as we have a few songs in D# as the key and down to B that it would be the best idea to get a fiver. I have got it straight in my head now...

Have you ever taken a bass into the bathtub ?

I think someone should take their bass into a bathtub and see if it sounds good - you never know it could be the best sound ever. The water would carry the low frequencies realy well. And if you wanted to take this further you could try it in the sea and see if you can attract whales.

    Expensive basses - any point?

I think it's a very good question. The way I have always bought basses is also on a budget, BUT what I do is pick the basses I like the feel of, play them unplugged, then play them plugged in and THEN look at the price tag. I have been sooooooooooo wrong on guessing the prices of instruments...
