Good bass for MeeeTTTTTaaaaaL!

Ok well somebody mentioned ESP is passing but IMHO for the money there is no better bass to be had than the ESP "F" series...i own 2 of them and not only do they sound the part but they also look it!

i would normally agree with this post. i play an esp myself, (the ltd d-6) and have played a few other models, and although they're all incredible basses, the op wanted something growly.
not to say the esp's/ltd's lack in the growl department, but to be honest there are much growlier basses to be had.

The F 405/404, switch the EMG DCs for EMG Js or something more expensive (delano, nordstrand) and you have a growl machine.

Why not? You could if you wanted too. I've heard of guys here on TB that play BC Rich's in their church bands. My point was the sound of a bass is not designed to work in one genre only. Sure a guy in a metal band might look a bit stupid playing a Traben Bootsy bass, but who's to say he's gonna sound bad? Just as any bass, the tone will fit right in with some good EQing.

Y'all can go limit your options thinking that certain basses don't do certain styles, but I like to leave all doors open. ;)

Yes, you have a point there. :p

But the problem with that bass is the pickups, the EMG DCs are pretty midscooped pickups. Unless you have a growl machine like a Spector those pickups will sound mid scooped all the time. (An how the hell do Spectors get that growl with a normal alder body???) :eek:
