*mental images of manufacturer segregations battling it out with 'metal' basses war-axe style*
There can be only one!
Suppose we hold a poll with 20 of the most named brands mentioned in all the "metal bass" threads.
Then after 2 weeks we'll see what brand has won and then we hold a poll on 20 basses of that brand.
And then we have an undisputed winner.
I'm super-serial. I need closure on the issue.

I play metal and have used the following and they all sounded great...
- Lakland
- Sadowsky
- Fender (P and J basses)
- Gibson (SG RI and G3)
- Warwick
- Charvel
- BC Rich
- Lado
- Peavey
- EBMM ( Bongo and Stingray)
+1 Peavy. Thinking of eViL J's Cirrus in particular. He gets an incredible tone from it that would make Nathan Explosion throw a goat:
I use one Fame Baphomet Gothic IV, Fame is the Mayones "cheap" brand, they're made in Poland and are great instruments.

How much did that bass run you?
I definately think that just about any bass can be used for metal. I think that much is clear after reading these many posts. And lets not kid ourselves either. The sub-genre of metal may also play a part in determining the kind of tone your after. Seriously. Anyways, I say choose the axe that slays 'em every time.
i am with the people saying that you can use pretty much use any bass..
i have had good results in heavy bands (not strictly metal though) using the following:
rickenbacker 4003 ( my current favourite)
musicman stingray ( my other favourite!)
fender jazz bass with bartolini pickups
warwick streamer jazzman

Awesome. Those things are next to impossible to play.

I picked up a spector Legend % and I love it. Lots of growl and very bright. Try one, they play like a dream.
I'd get a Warwick or a P-bass, paired with D'adarrio's and an aggressive amp. The Mesa M6 is perfect for that sound IMO.
