really consider spectors if you are looking for a sound with plenty of aggression. BTW, the Chaos Core doesn't look anything like the past Traben, which is why I mentioned it.

my favorites are warwick, ibanes, spector, modulus.

typical metal basses:
-alembic
-bc rich
-fender whatever, especially if it's active. you won't really get the look with these though
-ibanez whatever (except the artcore bass!)
-gibson ripper (preferred) or grabber (the gene simmons bass)
-gibson thunderbird
-schecter whatever

on a budget?
-epiphone thunderbird (strongly recommended) or les paul bass (cheaper and somewhat recommended)

slightly off-beat choices:
-rickenbacker (cliff burton used one sometimes but they're not common in metal)
-gibson sg bass (only if you don't downtune because short scales get floppy fast, and make sure to favor the bridge pickup! it's also got the look, for sure.)
-musicman whatever

and PLEASE, DO NOT MID SCOOP YOUR AMP! lots of metal players do that and it sounds awful. low-mids are what really makes a good metal tone. imo, ymmv, etc.

Well, Warwick makes the basses with the most growl Hands down. I have never heard any bass more growly than a SS2 or a Thumb NT 5.

But, Warwick isn't the only choices you can have for nice metal growly tone. You can also look into:

EBMM
Modulus
G&L
Lakland
Ric

or just going custom with a luthier and any luthier could make you a nice growly bass.

Also can't forget the older JAckson Charvel Basses with the pointy headstock for that metal look and feel

I love this forum. I'm thinking about getting a bass to play some metal stuff too, and I was gonna make a thread, but someone beat me to it!

From what I've read and searched, I'm looking at either the Epi Thunderbird Goth or the Squier Deluxe Jazz V Active.

+1 on the Epi man.
