Cheers mate, so when we record our own stuff it might sound like some classic thrash metal mixed in with old dirty biker metal like Saxon, should be interesting!
In no way was your "goofing around" in good spirits though, it was strictly derogatory and this post exemplified it.
I've gotta give it up for spectors here. Plenty of snap and punch, and they don't get buried under buzzsaw guitars. Love the Euros with P/J active pickups...
If you're looking for something that's NOT muddy, I would stay away from an Epi Thunderbird. On top of being extremely bassy and deep, they are a real bitch to play. The neck joint is way too far out, playing the first position sucks.

Growl.... that would be mainly from the eden stack behind the bass, am i right?
+1... what a great bass. It works for every genre, really. I used it in my metal band, pep band, church band, lol. It kills everything.
It growls through anything! But it definitely was sick through that Eden WT800B + D610XLT rig. I sold that rig a few months ago and since got a WT550B..Now looking for a decently priced D212XLT cab..
I had a MIM Jazzbass in which I put a set of 1983 Dimarzio's model J pick ups. I would dial the bass on Vol1@8, vol2@8 and tone @7 or 8, and the mean growl was on. Then I would get the in your face volume from a vintage SVT/810 set with the middle boost switch in high, with most other dials at the noon (or 12:00 o'clock) position. The rest of the sound comes from you and your picking technique.

Offhand I know Newsted rips 'em up and Mike Dean of Corrosion of Conformity too. Both those guys have a killer tone!
My choice is always a Spector though. For metal, a neckthru bass with active electronics and P & J pickups is gonna be hard to beat.
Amerian P's and J's are awesome, the Sadowsky's are better. But dude the G&L L2500 is freaking gross. That think is amazing for rock and metal. It will growl.
actually I find that both my Ibanez do great job both with tone and with playability ... Plus quite a few Hard Rock and Metal bassists are using the Soundgear series.
I would also recommend a Used BC Rich handmade. You can get lucky and find a good one for 900- 1200. I got the white Eagle in my sig for less than a grand. Awesome bass! Also, the original NJ Basses (the ones made in Nagoya Japan) are an excelllent value (usually 400-800 depending on condition).

. If you want something that isn't muddy but really fills up you could indeed consider something jazz-bassish. To be honest, I think Music Mans have an amazing metal sound, but so do Warwicks, Ibanezes, Fenders, Thunderbirds and... uhm... actually almost everything

I think you might be dead-on with the Fernandes, don't be fooled by the pickup's appearances, they look like humbuckers, but actually are single coils, just check out the video.
And if you don't like the Fernandes, I command you to get a Music Man
