Well, duh. The bass they had was a P bass so swapping anything else in a different shape in required routing. Most people when they do pickup 'upgrades' change like form factor for like, with very few doing anything more than that. That was their point.

That's mot comparing like for like and say swapping a P for a parallel coil HB will require routing at least. The point was stock vs aftermarket of the same type.

True, but that's only an issue in high Zout passive basses. In actives with a lower Zout, capacitance is not an issue (nor is cable resistance).

It's not a problem for low impedance pickups to work into the high input impedance of a preamp, it's actually how most analog circuits are designed.

Unless the pickups are really odd in some way, like extreme high or low output, I can't see any real reason why they wouldn't work with lots of aftermarket pres. It might require some soldering and adapting connectors etc, but not a difficult job I would think, and this is coming from an EE...

Yes, it was awful. All of it. No one used a pre CBS P with 20yo flats any more, so any other bass tone can't possibly sound any good.
