    Am I an absolute outlier?

Each player has his distinct playing style. Frets on basses differ, some 24-fret basses have shorter distances in-between frets, hence some bassists playing on 20-frets (Fender is one of the many) have difficulty placing their fingers on the proper fret (especially during slides). I used to...

Is it ok to quit over text message?

No no no. As painful as it is, you'll need to say goodbye to each of them and thank them for the great company and music playing for those years. Keep up the friendship for one day you might get together again playing your all-original songs.

Five- or Six-String Players: How much would you miss your low B, really?

Played five string for almost nine years and cant live without that low B#, D and Eb. I may have violated some bass playing rules but now I play higher towards the bridge using the scale involving the fifth string

Band mates won't wrap cables properly

I've been doing that for the past 30 years and still using the same cable, most friends get amazed when they learn it's a 30-year old cable and happy to learn the secret is in proper wrapping, which I learned from a Japanese musician 30 years ago :-)

What's you dream bass that you some day hope to own??

Much as I'm already happy with playing 5-string bass, I'd still go for the Sheehan Yamaha Attitude four string. Great tone, great form, great body fit on my ribs :-)

My Producer Say I Need Hollow Body Bass

What i've learned through years of playing and internet research, the bass tone has to focus on the middle frequencies so you can stand out among those loud guitars and fulfill your bottomline. Whatever bass you have as long as you know how to middle EQ it you, your producer, the band and the...

Am I simply not a 5/6 string player?

Been playing for 30 years on four string basses then switched to 5-string and loving it. The low E-flats up to Low Bs are great foundation for the music and make the bass sound stand out among those noisy guitars :-) Took me a while to adjust to muting E string but finally got it. The fifth low...

Band mates say that my bass is too loud. Need a little advice.

Three guitarists playing chords are a lot more sound than your bass. Been there too and what I did was to turn the bass speaker facing me (sort like a vocal stage monitor position) so I would hear myself better. Bass frequencies travel farther than guitar frequencies and hence will still reach...

How do you buy time on stage?

Let's always take into consideration that we also play for the audience and we want them to have a great time. This also means helping a bandmate get out of that undesirable spotlight by asking the vocalist (or anyone else in the band) to either talk to the audience as part of an icebreaker or...

Why do so many 5 & 6 string players NEVER use their low B?

It usually depends on the genre and style of play. As pointed out by most friends here, the B string is there for low notes and for fret pluck repositioning for convenience (plucking on a different fret using the B string to achieve the same notes). Some 5 or 6 string bassists are slappers and...

Being embarrassed by basses you love?

I agree with Stringly, don't get affected with their comments, as long as you play great it's OK. A lot of people will appreciate the great music and see beyond the gear. My first electric bass experience was using the top four strings of a Fender electric guitar. At the third jam session I was...

    Toby Deluxe V

Its tone can't be equaled to a Fender Precision nor Jazz bass, but it can come close to both if you try to pan the pups balance control only towards either front or bridge pups. Find the right mix between tone controls and the Tone Xpressor plus a little midrange frequency EQ boosts.

I need to quit a band...in a really bad moment

I second the motion, not worth staying given those circumstances. Just say you are quitting because you will need to concentrate on another job. Thank them for the good music and company. Those recorded songs might get big someday. Good luck :-)

What's the best compliment you've ever received about your playing?

I'm always excited to jam with musicians who play different genre as it widens my musical perspective. And most of them appreciate me being able to play impromptu and follow either the guitarist's chords or just listen to the melody and find my bass notes on the fly. Most of them say "you play...

Are 5 strings on the way out?

After playing four-string bass for more than 20 years, I love and enjoy the switch to five, I still play four strings once in a while but I love the flexibility of the five string's low notes giving me the lower edge than the guitarman's bar chords. Am happy I chose to play bass and am not...
