I am also looking into having a toggle for series/parallel switching. I think you need only one DPDT toggle switch. The wiring switches from having the pair of pickups connected in series or parallel, but not series or parallel for each pickup.

What I don't know is how much to release the truss rod. I have decreased the buzzing, but there is still a bit on the B and E strings. Hardly as bad, now, though!

My impression was that, since it was nickel plated steel, the tension should be very close to the stainless strings. But I made some adjustments to the truss rod for more relief, and that is definitely helping. Thanks for the suggestion! I guess it will be good enough until I can get somebody...

I changed them one-by-one, and tuned them each before changing the next string.
