I too retired from bass playing. I'm playing guitar and piano by myself now, and writing and recording my own music, from the comfort of my own home...finally after all these years. My bandmate is still a jerk though...wait, that's me! LOL. My new gig... Invalid Link Removed

Yeah, there are just SO many factors that went into my decision, and it's been a decision 5 years in the making anyway, so it wasn't as if it was a rush to judgement or some kind of impulsive reaction to any one thing. Since I've been playing guitar I don't miss playing bass one bit. In fact...

After watching the AMA's (American Marketing Awards) last night, I know I made the right decision. My wife wanted to "watch" them and it was so obvious as to the state of music these days, that leaving this scene is exactly what I need to do, and return back to playing music that matters to me...

Perhaps you could try writing music on your acoustic guitar, but think in terms of the bass or rhythm section. Even when fingerpicking I tend to write more rhythmically than melodically.

Yeah, that's about the range it was in.

It definitely takes some getting used to, but like anything else, practice makes perfect.

I played about 15 acoustics, including a $2500 Martin, but I fell in love with this Taylor 110e. Just felt right. Poor quality pic, but here she is...

Um, no. I can't. Not even an extended range bass works for what I'm into now. I've had extended range basses which ain't gonna cut it. I get the whole "be creative, just in a different way on bass" thing, but that ship sailed years ago.

I do find it interesting that over the years, I've seen so many guitarists switch over to bass and not really understand the rhythm section. Now that I'm playing guitar, I'm still very conscious of the rhythm and the groove of a song and when I write things they always have a good groove, even...

LOL. I have an electric piano I play on from time to time. But I love guitar, and seeing as I play just for myself, I AM always in demand. LOL.

Yeah, exactly. I also have a nice Roland EP9 electric piano that I play from time to time. I think recording is something I'll do just for posterity. Something for my kids after I'm gone. Playing music just for myself was a little odd at first, but I'm finding more peace this way. I've spent so...

I understand it. In many ways, it's rationalization and validation. "How could someone quit playing bass when bass playing is so (fill in your most compelling reason here)?" Heck, if I were 20 years younger, single and in better health, surrounded by a better music scene, and had more time, I'd...
