    Ibanez Portamento Club

I did a little sanding then applied fretboard oil to the whole thing - plays fine and looks like it originally did. I didn't see any evidence of a finish. There does seem to be variety among at least panga panga in terms of grain. BTW... .017 - where are you measuring that?

    Ibanez Portamento Club

When I pick up my TR500FL lined four-string, by habit the eyes go to those lines. Much better habit to be adjusted to the parallax with just the edge markers, not look so much, relax and listen more.

    Ibanez Portamento Club

Visual intonation on the lower fret positions is initially easier on the four-string because the neck isn't as wide. There's a parallax challenge on the high string or two, at the lower fret positions. The symptom is those notes sound flat. My regular was a four-string lined fretless, and...

    Ibanez Portamento Club

Here you go, a short clip... just what popped into my head. SRF705 piezo full/no mags, piezo tone 3/10. Stock Chromes with about eight months of regular play, still sounding good. Each clip normalized to -6 dB peak before export. 01-dry - original input/straight through. Not bad as is, the...

    Ibanez Portamento Club

While my luthier does a good job setting up my fretted basses, I set up the Portamentos because among other reasons I see no way he could get the intonation correct for me. Same (stock actually) strings, the saddles end up in different spots even among the SRF700 and 705. I chalk it up to...

    Ibanez Portamento Club

I took the plunge and bought these, total just over $30: Upright Basses Archives - 3 Sigma Audio - the Mod Bass flavor, what I most liked ELECTRIC TO UPRIGHT BASS CONVERTER! - 3/4 DB ELECTRIC TO 4/4 DOUBLE BASS CONVERTER! - 4/4 DB All easily loaded into my Zoom B6 via SD card. Not surprisingly...

I had that too on my first SRF705 - piezo distortion just on the low B, and returned it for a refund. The one that replaced it didn't have that problem (so far, fingers crossed) and is a keeper, with a more fine, uniform grain on the neck.

    Fingering on a fretless

My Portamentos are set for pitch with my finger directly atop the extension of the line on the side, centering on the 12th fret and referencing the harmonic. It took some tweaking of the saddles, and they ended up not were I thought they'd be - yet this setup works for my fingers. This is...

4 strings or 5+ strings and why?

Definitely both - right tool for the job. If you're not sure why you need/want a 5+, forget about it for now and hone your technique on a good four. You can play fine music on either! If you have and regularly practice both, you'll remain proficient. I remember getting wires crossed and...

The Official Sterling by Music Man Owners Club

I'm glad he demonstrated that, and I couldn't tell the difference either. In the early 80s my second bass was a brand new Ibanez Roadstar II Deluxe. I loved its unique tone out of the one big humbucker - punchy, in a word. At the time I'd never heard of a MM Stingray. Coincidentally, when I...

Bassists who are lefties who play righty club.

Practice - fast eighths, triplets, sixteenths exercises. On one string and across strings. :bassist: Work on the speed and however many fingers you use - usually two and sometimes three for me, so they sound the same. I rarely play with a pick, and do like to slap. Focus on the precision on...

Official Markbass Club - the beat goes on, and on....

I bought a NY151 black to put under my CMD 151P for larger venues. It definitely had less punch than the CMD... and the cab is perhaps 12 lb. heavier than the CMD in part because it has a big ceramic magnet. Heavier wood too, pretty sure. Swapped the driver with a Celestion BN15-400X...

    Fretless Bass Suggestions

I played a lined fretless Ibanez for a long time (TR500 FL) and finally upgraded to an SRF700 Portamento last fall, also an Ibanez. Liked it so much I also bought its sibling the SRF705. It has short lines on the side of the neck exactly where frets would be. It's technically unlined yet easy...

Bassists who are lefties who play righty club.

Cool to see a club! Count me in. Lefty to write and misc. things, scissors and guitar righty because the options are so limited otherwise. I double on saxes and there's actually more going on in the LH there. Common instrument for lefties in my experience. I just have to be conscientious to...

The Official Sterling by Music Man Owners Club

I dug around one more time in the gig bag... Found a small flat baggie with the needed 1/8" metal bar and small Allen wrench. All good. Bit of a dicey experience at that GC. The two stores I went to were the only way I could find in central FL to actually play and buy these...
