+1 for TC Electronic Leave it with default Toneprint. One knob - can be as simple as it gets. Load different toneprints if you want to modify and get more complex. I have 3 pedals on my board, this is one of them.

My favorite P/Us are active humbucker P/Us (electrical current added to the pickup itself) made with ceramic magnets. Most seem to be made with Alnico these days. Having said that, I could go for a P/J, or even a P/H, active or passive as a second bass.

+1 for the SpectraComp. Toneprints to find the compression characteristics you want, then one knob. Not for everyone, but I use it for the simplicity while performing.

The original has a wonderful rumbly, deep voice and enough volume for practice. Doesn't sound thin like most practice rigs. It sounds like a larger rig being played at lower volume. To me (and I know many would disagree) I like the original tone of this one way better than the Ampeg SVT-210AV...
