It's the sound. The thinness of the sound, it's the bridge pickup mostly, a lot of people like them for cutting through a band, or for adding definition to accentuate quicker lines, but I find most of those sort of sounds trebly and annoying. Absolutely hate the sound of most Jazz bass bridge...

If you like the idea of having 1 P and 1 J, you should keep it. You may grow to love it, but if years down the track you still aren't really bonded you should sell it, but at least that way you would of given it a fair chance. If it were me, the J would be gone. But that's personal preference...

I have an older version of the Ibanez SR405, it has 16.5 mm spacing, and you can definitely slap on them. I never really had trouble with it, but perhaps just work on being a bit more accurate with your slapping technique and you won't have to search and buy another bass.
