If someone handed you $3000 for a new bass

I'd get a Roscoe Century Standard Plus 6 string with Spanish cedar body, bubinga top, bartolini pickups and pre amp, pau ferro fretboard, and natural finish.

What best describes your bass buying habits?

I look for wants needed...or what I perceive is necessary. Right now I want a 6 string. I thought about going custom because the wood choices would be more varied but can't quite afford it. So I'm looking into 6ers that would come close to the custom that I want.

Is it worth joining the AFM

Alright, I've been considering joining the AFM. I've read up on the AFM at their website and now I'm looking for any opinions from people that have experience with them. I'm trying to decide if it would be worth joining. Any help would be appreciated.

    In honor of James Jamerson

I'm just starting this thread to remember the great James Jamerson on his birthday. Also to allow any TBer the chance to share stories about Mr. Jamerson. For me, when I started playing bass I began to learn some his bass lines and it made me appreciate his genius and innovation on the...

Bass solo over slow C minor groove

Cool! Look forward to it. I'll have to put something together so everyone can check it out. Was playing over a couple of tracks earlier and came up with some descent stuff. But everything I play is only descent at best. Guess its the perfectionist in me, lol.

Bass solo over slow C minor groove

Have you tried the jazz Practice Tracks? There's some really nice tracks to play over on that one too.

Bass solo over slow C minor groove

I know that backing track, it's on that Practice Tracks CD. Can't remember if it the jazz or the blues CD, but I've played to track a lot. It's a great groove! I think I'll revisit that track today. Nice solo by the way.

How do bassist learn songs in 15 seconds at jams?

I know how the OP feels. I started playing blues jams after about a year and half if playing bass. Luckily I had the bassist for the host band help me out. Giving me advice and a lot of times guiding me through the changes. Eventually I was able to hear the changes, but his help was extremely...

    SOLD Roscoe SKB3005 Myrtle/Sp. Cedar/Ebony

A little off topic, Jeff Moote, how does the Sp. cedar body sound compared to the ash bodies that Roscoe does? I'm looking to get a Roscoe this year and trying to decide between the Spanish cedar or ash body.

Which GAS will you succumb to in 2013?

My GAS for 2013 will be a Roscoe Standard Plus 6 string. I'm deciding on the exact specs but I'm definitely going to get it this year. Just putting together enough money to make it mine. Can't wait!!

    Funkadelic or Parliament?

I saw George Clinton at Full Sail years ago and he was saying that Parliment and Funkadelic were the same band (with a few personnel changes, if any) but on different record labels. He did it to pimp the record labels and make more money. I thought it was interesting and genius at the same time.

    Can "Groove" be taught?

Groove is more than just notes and rhythmic placement. It also invokes the dynamic of the notes played, how you articulate those notes, how you play the notes (finger style, thump, etc.), and even the rest that you put in between the notes. Groove is also subjective, what I think is a great...

Bassists that, if you replaced them, would change the entire sound of the band

I would have to go with Ray Brown (pretty much anything he's played on), often imitated, but never duplicated. James Jamerson is very much the same way, hard to duplicate what he did, or his touch/feel on those classic tracks. Leonard "Hub" Hubbard from The Roots. The bands vibe changed when...

    OK Last Compressor survey...

I agree with the suggestion about going rack mount. You get more control over the parameters for compression. I've used a DBX 266 studio compressor and it works great for me. Research some of the studio compressors that are rack mountable, you be happy you did.

Finding a pocket with a drum machine

Playing with a drum machine is an advantage, you don't have to worry about time fluctuating. With a drum machine, you have control over the groove and where it's placed.
