Can I put "normal strings" onto a nut that was filed

Thanks for the info, I'll probably use pencil graphite on the nut, too (maybe to keep the strings from doing unintentional open-sting overtones).

    Why have so many basses?

I'll probably have 4 basses at most tbh 6-string for anything under the sun (check) 4-string for drop-C or D-standard (check) 5-string for F-standard or any other extremely low tuning (not yet) Fretless (5 or 4) for anything... fretless (not yet) Is that too much, or too little? While I could...

Can I put "normal strings" onto a nut that was filed

I had the nut widened to accommodate thicker strings (0.175 -> 0.85), not deepened though. Will the extra space cause any tuning issues? I'm planning on putting "normal" strings back on, if/when I get another bass specialised for the low tuning. Would I have to get a new nut, or is it fine for...

Going to install very thick strings (.175 - .85) on my 4 string. What should I worry about?

Seems like we'll hit a negative ceiling at some point though, good points. I think I like my 4-string as it is actually. But, I did find a bass that I may get in future (not anytime soon, I have an octave pedal anyways) that I'll perform surgery on to slap those strings on it.

Going to install very thick strings (.175 - .85) on my 4 string. What should I worry about?

Lower frequencies need more volume and larger surface area to be audible, and that's the only issue with lower tones. sub 30hz can actually sound like a note with proper amplification. Although, I probably won't go lower than an E an octave below a 4-string. A rumble bass, I'd say, would be a...

Going to install very thick strings (.175 - .85) on my 4 string. What should I worry about?

Depends which style of which is played. Traditionally, the low B isn't always used. But, that doesn't mean a low F (lower than B) is never applicable. I wouldn't go any lower than an E an octave below a 4-string (as you can actually clap the note, it's that low). In many newer styles of Metal...

Going to install very thick strings (.175 - .85) on my 4 string. What should I worry about?

I'd like to know how to go about installing them without fret buzz issues (given the thicker strings will poke out of the nut). Really looking to find a safe way to file the nut, which tools I should use, and things I may not know about to look out for. Any help is appreciated.

I've been playing bass for a Whole year now. Any tips going forwards?

Funny you mention Peavey.. My bass is a Peavey Zephyr! The fret prying was more of a badly phrased joke, I like the peavey waay too much to even pry one off. The bass sounds great direct. Loses its special tone after it's out of a speaker sadly :( I only need a 6-string, a better overdrive, a...

I'd may as well just get a 5 string if I was one of those nu metal kids from 10 years ago lol. Using the extra C string compositionally ,in a song, with a whole band (drums, guitars, vocals, keys, etc) can be super good. I'd basically just soak in everything by Dream Theater and Karnivool (and...

That is interesting. I have been thinking of drums too. I actually used to play them!

I've been playing bass for a Whole year now. Any tips going forwards?

The only reason I would want a 6-string is because of the utility of the extra strings. I'd be fine with a single bass for however long it works. As long as it sounds decent, I'd keep it.

I've been playing bass for a Whole year now. Any tips going forwards?

I've focused so much on technique (rhythms and speed etc) that I just haven't considered finding musicians to work with. I'm near 15, which means I have fairly slim pickings (literally the only reason that anecdotal listing of an age can be important), as I'm still in school. I have a few...
