I don't think it is wired out of phase, it doesn't sound like it.

I was under the impression that mine lacks something in the wood itself. I should try other J Basses out of curiosity.

Thanks for the replies. Everything is properly set up and i've spent time experimenting with pups height and such. Even unplugged it sounds far less punchy than my Precisions.
