Modern / Recent songs to add to our list... please help! Variety Dance Band

I second the Paramour tune! You're already doing Bruno and Daft Punk, that's about as "groove" as it's going to get for pop stuff these days. If you're looking for modern pop in general, Ed Shearin seems to be all the rage with the kids right now.

    Which Bass should I buy?

I have had my Ibanez SR506 for 10 years, and gigged it regularly in that time. The only issue I've had, is the low quality finish. Prepare to have lots of dings and scratches if you go that route. That being said, the tone from the Bartolinis is killer, and the bass plays well.

Two chicks at the same time...

I'm currently playing behind an artist who has multiple projects (Country, Blues/Rock trio, Acoustic trio). It works out, because there is always a gig, and that means more $$ in my pocket. I also do a lot of first call gigs for local worship teams (before that, I was on a very busy PW team for...

    Broke my first ever string

I used to break strings on a fairly regular basis, usually during regular playing (although I am a slapper). I would break a string every few months, with everything I tried (black diamond, EB, cleartone, rotosound, etc...) and with every bass. I switched to La Bella nylon tapewound strings...

    The Official MTD USA Thread

Those were at Summer NAMM. They all sounded great, but I have to say, the ash bodied nordstrand Saratoga 4 sounded REALLY good!

That's gonna be nice! Also, you're gonna love those nylon strings. They're special versions of La Bella's white nylons, and they are killer! I've been using the nylons for a few years now, and I have the new MTD ones on my 635. They are so good!

A little TLC goes a long way

Great story, I love stuff like this! Not to thread jack, but I have a similar story. I have a young student (just turned 12) who really loves playing bass. He was playing on a dean starter bass that he really beat up (wasn't particularly fantastic to begin with). I had an older Squier jazz...

    NBD: PRS Grainger 5

Gorgeous bass! I had the chance to play a full custom Grainger with a spalted maple top at the Nashville GC a few years back, they are incredible basses! Congrats!!

Do you ever wish you started out on a different instrument?

The short answer is yes. I started on oboe in middle school, but hated it. Picked up guitar in 9th grade when my grandfather bought me a squier starter pack (I wanted the bass, but it was more expensive). I never really felt comfortable on guitar. Then my dad started playing bass for my the...

If you could have only one bass for a year, which one would you choose?

Sell the P. I like J basses better, but I sold both of my MIA artist Js (Roscoe Beck IV & Victor Bailey Fretless) to fund my own custom bass (see my signature), and kept an Ibanez SR506 as my gap bass.

    Why the P bass obsession

A Precision bass is versatile in the fact that it will sit so well in the mix for so many different genres. If you're looking for a bass to be tonally versatile, covering a wide spectrum of different bass tones, maybe go in a different direction, but if you're looking for one bass that can be...

    Official Orange Club II

Jumping in. I have the TB500 running through the sp212, as seen in my avatar. Great little amp, I love how transparent the tone is! I had an issue on new year's, I believe they said the board went out. That was great, because it was during sound check on gig 1 of a double header, but orange had...

    Why no open strings?

I play in a worship setting with a lot of loops, so sometimes, tonally, i'll slot into the mix better by playing a fretted B rather than an open B. I might also play fretted over open for consistency of sound/ease of playing a given set of changes. That being said, sometimes I need the low...

Just curious.... Which do you prefer ?

Jazz bass, Maple board. If I'm playing 4 string (I play primarily 6 these days), I prefer the neck profile and nut width of a J bass, as well as the brightness (and the look) imparted by the maple board.
