Unpopular opinion? Boutique basses are great and worth the money

As a person that builds boutique basses to order, let's clear some air. If you want xy and hh just the way you want it and in the color and fit you ask, that's custom. You know who you are and I thank everyone of you when you order. Now on botique on the shelf basses (your Fodera, sadowsky...

Are used costs hurting our community?

Since this is a conversation on why a builder charges what they do I'll pop in in how I figure my prices (most aren't going to and YMMV on the why) My base price is for a poplar body, 34" scale, fretted bass with Artec pickups and inexpensive hardware, oil finish-that's $800- because the time...

Who's never owned a Fender bass?

Sorry for the shade, but.... No Fenders ever for me (too heavy, too pricey, too much hype). Do many other awesome basses, and no, I ain't missing a thing. Thanks!

A "tone is in the hands" story...

Now wait a second. Having sold every bass I made from either word of mouth or the buyer heard me in a store trying amps, effects etc. I can say the instrument can help quite a bit. I'm no great shakes as a player and it was usually touring or recording folks that bought me stuff. Can't say it's...

Songs that just don’t need to be covered...

I've been in a handful of punk and ska bands over the years. Once I break the folks in I always demand we learn a version of Freebird that's 2 minutes long in the style of the band I'm with. Inevitably, some jerk calls it out, we ROCK IT! And the crowd explodes. Freebird FOREVER!!!

If you couldn't play Bass anymore......

If I'm in hell already, I'd fire up that accordion! Polka in the eye until my Polish liver gave in....

Would you be offended if a band asked you to play a P bass?

If the money is "independently wealthy" money, sure. If not, I'd laugh at the 12 pound monster and show them I am using a custom 5 pound bass that will sit anywhere in the mix with my DI rig straight to the house. Not interested in lugging 200 pounds of gear for 'magic'.

Why did you quit a band?

Tour vans suck when it's you and an entire ska combo with gear in a minivan. Guitarist that drag, every song, every day. Not enough pay at the gigs. After poleaxing a guitarist that kicked my speaker in, I figured it was easier to leave than face jail. All in all, punk and ska were a great...

    Special Edition build-off: OctoPhoenix

Pick ups, go with what you will, but if you preamp it and are worries about highs, find a Sadowsky preamp and you ought to have no worries dialing in what you want. How are this Alumitones (so curious) btw?
