Seeking the Joe Osborn sound: foam mute a good or bad idea?

While the Pbass & pick use (she was a guitarist before she was a bassist) are correct for her approach, Carol Kaye was known for NOT using foam mutes. Carol used felt over the top of her strings, not foam mutes underneath. Behold, from the archives of our beloved tallkbass itself...

    Double Bass Alternatives to Tuxedos?

I will put in my $0.02 for good tailoring. Nothing beats a tux that is made for the job in question. I know some players who have the left sleeve a little longer than the right and more relief on the left shoulder to accommodate the position. A tux you play in should be tailored differently than...

Woke up this morning and realised I'm a Jazz Bass guy...

This is a good point and one that really doesn't get discussed too much but definitely one I found to be true. When doing pops concerts as an upright player doubling on electric, or in a pit orchestra situation, I always felt that the Precision just blended together with the strings and...

What jazz PU’s pair best with Sadowsky VTC preamp?

I have my Sadowsky pre/vtc paired with a set of Bartolini 57CBJD pickups in a 2012 Fender Jazz Deluxe 5 and the sound is stellar IMHO. It is so much better than the stock pickups and pre-amp.

Anyone convert their P to a PJ and regretted it?

For whatever reason, the P/J basses I have used VERY seldom got any use from the J pickup. That P bass sound alone is just "better" to my ears and that is just my opinion >> y.m.m.v. The one exception is my P/J fretless with Barts. The two pickups together are glorious on that bass. Fretted...

What do you in particularly like about playing 5 string basses?

    1. Transposing when you need to is a lot easier on a 5 string IMHO. In Jazz situations this comes up with some frequency. 2. Playing across the neck rather than up and down when there are wide interval leaps is nice to have, when that sort of thing comes up. 2. More and more music is being...

Finicky Precision 5 string PII bass guitar necks. I had to return

My Pro II Precision V was practically perfect outta the box and stayed that way ever since I purchased it in 2021. Rock solid neck. One of the best sounding P basses I have ever owned and I was skeptical about going to a P5. I needn't have worried as it is a very balanced sounding instrument.

Do you wipe down new flats before installing?

Why are you removing it? That's "the funk" baby! Kidding aside though: Charles Mingus used to eat fried chicken before playing at times just to keep the strings lubricated. So, I suppose it depends on your taste, preferences. I am sure you can find great players who are extremely careful about...

    Flats on a jazz?

Sure worked well for Joe Osborn.

Bass refinishing at a furniture refinishing shop?

I immediately thought that if you want to be really original you could always have it upholstered. Odd but you'd have a one off original and it would be oh, so cuddly soft too...... I will see myself out.

What was the real electric bass sound of the 80's?

Some great observations here. That time was sort of the awakening of the electric bass.

What was the real electric bass sound of the 80's?

The mid to late 70's saw a real explosion of variety in bass choices. By the 80's I don't think you could nail it down to just one sound or brand. It really depended on whom and what you were listening to. The Jazz and Precision have always been major players but a lot of people were using...

Rick Beato takes down “Yacht Rock”

Agreed Dr Cheese. This is just an unkind thing to say to anyone. I hope we can strive to be better as a community than this post.
