MIM basses and guitars often have different dimensions than MIA. You gotta measure the exact neck and the exact body you want to be sure it will fit.

Also, I had a blast messing around with the Ibanez TMB100, which is $250 new. The only downside to that bass is the preamp might be too aggressive and you can't really bypass it (but you can roll back both EQ knobs).

I won't assert "best," but I really enjoyed the Yamaha BB734A. Granted, you may not want a PJ with an active preamp

I remember hearing if you can fit a business card between the pocket, you may want to adjust the tightness. I think worse case, a proper luthier can shim the neck for a good fit?
