How many basses do you own? (Currently) Part 2

I am at 18. Many Fender Jazz and Precisions, couple of Musicman basses, Mike Lull, Ken Smith, Ibanez, Guild, Hofner. I was thinking about this the other day because I gravitate to the same few basses all the time. It might be the feel and the tone combination. Some basses just stand out to...

Electronics upgrade for Ibanez SR1900E Premium bass

Thanks. It is a big ol mess of electronics in there for sure. Obviously this is a project of interest and love as the money spent wouldn’t be a great investment. However, improving the sound for such a fast playing bass would be nice.

Electronics upgrade for Ibanez SR1900E Premium bass

Great. Thank you. These are the only Nordstrand PUs that I own so I wasn't sure which component would make the biggest difference. I was looking at the Aguilar OBP3. The majority of my basses are passive Ps and Js. The only active basses that I own are a StingRay and a Ken Smith. This...

Electronics upgrade for Ibanez SR1900E Premium bass

One of the basses that I love is my Ibanez SR1900E. I love the wood and playability. I have never been particularly blown away with the tone. It has the stock Nordstrand Big Singles passive pickups with the stock preamp and controls. I was looking to upgrade the bass to a beefier tone. To...

Are Ken Smith basses still popular?

I have owned many basses over the years. The two finest have been Ken Smith and Fodera. I sold both because they were just so expensive. Nothing played like those two basses, period. I have always missed them and just bought another Ken Smith. It will not be sold this time.

Are Ken Smith basses still popular?

"Popularity" is a zero-factor in how I choose basses. I could not care any less if the brand has a million devotees or none. One thing I like about Ken Smith basses is that you do not see a bunch, so they are a bit unique. Also, besides being excellent musical instruments, I consider them...

    Fender vs copies

A lot of interesting comments here. As an owner of many, many Fenders I have always found them to have individual variability. I always bought American and Custom Shop. They have always impressed me with better overall quality. I once bought MIM P Bass that I hated the tone, so I swore off...

Pickup covers "ashtrays", do you use them?

I have many Fenders and keep bridge covers on a few for looks. I also keep some foam under them for dampening purposes so there is some function as well. I have only one of my old Jazz basses with a bridge cover. The bottom line for pickup covers in that they just get in the way of playing so...

Music Man Caprice: True Boutique Quality

I love passive basses and in that vein have been a Fender guy for years. I just prefer the sound and don't have to worry about batteries. I do own several active basses that are great however. I ran into a Caprice when they first came out and was impressed. Fit and finish are perfect. I...

The official "Show your basses" thread part 19!

You have a good eye! I used to really try and keep a lot of my guitars and basses exactly period correct, but I decided that I am more interested in playing and collecting than just collecting. so I do some changing and swapping of things when I want. Funny that you spied the Silver P Bass...

The official "Show your basses" thread part 19!

Haha Good guesses. Red is '79 original P Bass that the pickup just failed on. I just replaced all pots, wiring and pickup with a custom shop '63 pickup and upgraded CTS pots etc. The next is a '59 Relic P Bass. The black one is a "parts assembled" Frankenbass P Bass from various basses. It...

P Bass Tone pot acting like volume...

Oddly enough, it worked fine wired directly to the jack. That threw me off and I went back and redid all the wiring and checked everything again with multimeter. Still sounded bad etc. Finally out of frustration, I tried the new pickups with the wiring and viola'. It worked beautifully.

Of all my basses, I tend to love my Fenders, They just play great, and always sound good in the mix. I have many others, but here is the Fender Family. Tried and true.
