It wasn't so much that it was "thumpy" - I want thump. It was just dead dead dead and had no pitch center. As in, it had lots of different pitch centers and sounded almost like some kind of multiphonic. Got an Anima D. Tonewise, it sits nicely between the Anima A and the Lyon med G, so...

How many times has it been said that the goal of studying with a metronome is not to develop metronomic time? This straw man has been so thoroughly beaten that it might be worth taking some time to restuff him before resuming.

Does the recipient have any experience with playing? If so, it might be best to let him in on the decision-making; an instrument is a personal thing. If not, it might be best to apply the funds to renting a bass and lessons, to make sure this is an instrument he'll want to play before...

To be fair, I haven't read anything else by Mr. Payton, and only really have a vague "big picture" sense of who he is. But I don't really think that matters. I know how I responded to what he wrote, and what I think he means, or at least what I would mean if I had written those things...

That is correct. Don't forget the octaves. For example, a clarinet is going to read up a major second, but a tenor saxophone reads up a major ninth.
