Double Bass My bass hates gut D strings?

It wasn't so much that it was "thumpy" - I want thump. It was just dead dead dead and had no pitch center. As in, it had lots of different pitch centers and sounded almost like some kind of multiphonic. Got an Anima D. Tonewise, it sits nicely between the Anima A and the Lyon med G, so...

Double Bass My bass hates gut D strings?

Thanks to all of you!! I never realized that gut Ds were often problematic. I love the sounds of the other three strings, so I'm a bit hesitant to start mucking around with soundpost adjustments. I think I'll try an Anima. So... anyone want to buy a less than one month old Pistoy light D...

Double Bass My bass hates gut D strings?

Hey gang - long time, no post... My bass doesn't seem to like gut D strings, and I'm wondering what the answer is. About a year ago, I went from Evah Pirazzi weichs to a mixed set of Anima E and A and Gamut Lyon medium D and G. The D string just never settled in. It was dead and didn't...

    Double Bass Andrew Simpkins

Interesting to see this pop up. I was just listening to Blue Hour, and thinking of doing a search here for info on him.

    Double Bass DB stand?

I also don't have an available corner. After using (and disliking) the Ingles, I switched to the Invalid Link Removed: much, much better, IMO.

Double Bass The different ways of approaching Improvisation..

If you've missed it every time it's been posted, one more statement of it isn't going to do much good. If you're sincerely interested, reread the thread, focusing on what people are actually saying, and not what you think they're saying. If you don't want to use a metronome, that's totally...

Double Bass The different ways of approaching Improvisation..

How many times has it been said that the goal of studying with a metronome is not to develop metronomic time? This straw man has been so thoroughly beaten that it might be worth taking some time to restuff him before resuming.

Yeah - I always wondered what they were for... TMYK!

Double Bass seeking help in gift giving, upright for 1K

Does the recipient have any experience with playing? If so, it might be best to let him in on the decision-making; an instrument is a personal thing. If not, it might be best to apply the funds to renting a bass and lessons, to make sure this is an instrument he'll want to play before...

Double Bass Why isn't Jazz that popular? (DB forum thread)

To be fair, I haven't read anything else by Mr. Payton, and only really have a vague "big picture" sense of who he is. But I don't really think that matters. I know how I responded to what he wrote, and what I think he means, or at least what I would mean if I had written those things...

Here's a nice little Rorschach Test for the participants of this discussion: On Why Jazz Isn’t Cool Anymore . . . . « Nicholas Payton

Double Bass writing for transposing instruments

That is correct. Don't forget the octaves. For example, a clarinet is going to read up a major second, but a tenor saxophone reads up a major ninth.

So "any amateur" could easily play as well as Miles on "So What"?

Double Bass Why isn't Jazz that popular? (DB forum thread)

I couldn't disagree with this more. IMO, there's a world of difference between creating music that happens to be simple, and being able to read the notation of such music off a page. As mentioned earlier, it often takes a master to create something simple and beautiful. You virtually never...
