You could always follow the guitar note for note on that arpeggiated part, then bang out eighth note roots for the strummed portion. Viola.

Check out the guys from Psychostick. They're pretty metal, and have a really unique style.

I'm primarily a rock player, but have been getting more and more into Funk and Groove styles. The thing is, I don't slap and at this point I'm not really interested in it. Are there any good tunes/bands that don't have too much slap?

There's a really good "For Dummies" book out there called "Bass Guitar Exercises For Dummies". It breaks down a recommended practice session and tells you just what to practice to improve. Check it out, see if it's for you.

If you get it someplace that can be covered by a shirt, then go for it. I have many friends with high profile jobs and tattoos. I personally have 3 and a very good job. If it's something you want, go for it. You might not like it later...but then again, you might.

Try learning your modes too. They provide a really interesting way to play over the chords the guitar is playing.
