Back: Shoulder (with crack). The other side looks just like this, with the crack in the exact same spot.

Neck and Fingerboard. The fingerboard turns out to be brownish rather than black. The black looks very grimey on the edges with the brown color. One of the previous owners put on some guiding stickers... Heel joint:

Yep, it's a fret of a different fretwire thickness that already has been whacked in by someone less shy than me... the edges stand out of the wood. I could of course rip all frets out and make it a fretless...

This is mine as I got it (for free). Since then cleaned it and put on some roundwounds. It's got 1 bad fret but in my garage rock band holds out quite allright!

Thanks both! Indeed, the color is a neglected matted roughed dark brownish, and on the back some hints of red and gloss finish. The fingerboard is somewhat multicolored, maybe just dirty. The neck is dark as well and looks finished. How do I recognize ebony from other woods on a double bass...
