Awesome post Silky! This should be a sticky, seriously, you covered so much ground. The DBX is VCA and the way it clamps down on your peaks is super extreme. I think it's a cool sound and easy to setup. But it's probably not for everybody. Also, I know the 1176 is great, I just always get mixed...

You're recording slap bass bass and want to control the dynamic range of your pops and slaps. Do you reach for a DBX 160, 1176 or LA2a? What's your strategy for setting it up?

Gotcha. Like if I was running through a nice pre-amp that only had mic inputs. I would connect bass > di > pre > Interface via mic input.

No budget, but I would say 1000-ish is usually what I can get away with, especially if I also let go of some of my gear. Anything too far north of that and the boss usually shuts me down. :)

It's mostly just an issue during the winter where it could have gone from extreme cold temperatures to warm temperatures. Keeping it in the case helps make that gradual thermal shift slower. I wouldn't do it with an electric, but I would absolutely do that for a high-end solid wood acoustic.
