Moved into a house - Time for a real amp!

I mostly listen and play fingerstyle funk and slap on my stingray and play oldies on my pbass with flats.

I have no experience with real amps besides my BA-108 practice amp.
I usually go direct into my apollo twin or through my Tone Hammer D.I.

Virtually, I tend to use either the UAD Ampeg SVT plug for classics and the Eden W800 for modern tones.

What do you guys recommend!

Congrats on the house. That got to be exciting. I agree a 210 cab is great way to start. Make sure it’s an 8 ohm cab to make it easier to add another cab down the road.

As you can see in my avatar, I’m an Eden fan but it’s somewhat out of vogue, and heavy. Great stuff, and buying used you can get sore incredible buys.

Congratulations on the house!

I agree with a lot of suggestions regarding a class D head and a cab. If you can buy used, you can get a lot for $1000.

I really like the Fender Bassman Neo Cabs. The 15" is great and so is the 4x10". I would recommend getting 500 watts or more if you want to do P with flats, I just like a lot of headroom for that tone.

I have a Markbass Casa head (500watt) which is basically discontinued at this point. It's good for old school stuff, not sure if it does funk / slap at all.

I would say focus on the cab(s), you can always upgrade the head later and use what you purchase now as a backup.

Bassman 59... Ampeg SVT with 810 cab...
These are legendary gear. It's normal to GAS for them...
However, they have a fantastic sound for early rock'n'roll music, up to the seventies.
How good as it is, it might not be accurate for more recent tunes...
Time has passed, tech as improved, you might consider something more versatile.
It's like the Fender 51 precision bass, we all want one, I have a quite good replica, but I usually play my Sadowsky, because it just sound and feels better in most cases.
My advice would be: Be aware of this and ask yourself if you look for a collector or the most appropriate piece of equipment to play in 2020.
It's not everyday that you spend 1000$ for an amp is It?
Make whatever choice is best for you!

I just got a Hartke TX600 paired with an HD410. It came in at just under 1000.00
People have reported it to be under-powered but it is because they don’t understand how the gain on this amp works. I’ve done 4 medium sized bar gigs with it and it is great for that. This amp is very loud with proper settings. For home practice there is enough headroom I can dial in some great sounds at a lower volume.

For what you describe, Id probably get a 350-500w & 210 @ 8ohm (maybe a 115) so I think you’re on the right track. Then you can add another matching cab if you wanna get nuts. We can throw brands at you till the cows come home, but best if you can get out and see what clicks. Personally, If someone wrote me a blank check I’d go Aguilar. I got my Markbass rig for a good used price, and I like it a lot.

PS where the Mesa crew at?? :laugh:;)

If you’re looking into the future and you see multiple amps/cabs in your collection for different reasons, now’s a good time to get a tube amp. The tube amp can live in your living room or studio space. It doesn’t sound like you will need to be lugging it around anytime soon. By the time you are ready to get out regularly for gigging it’ll be the right time to get a second amp that’s lightweight and portable. I only suggest getting the tube amp because they really are nice to play through.
There are so many that have beautiful tones it’s impossible to pick for you. I have a CTM-100 and had a pf-20t. Good luck with the hunt.

Thank you. It mostly came down to turning down (though not as much as I thought I might have had to) and getting the speaker(s) in my face; I think the high pass filter helps, but it doesn’t solve the problem on its own. This also helps, haha:

I know GK gets a lot of love. Unfortunately my only experience has been with my Plex. It’s going to be hard but I’ll try to keep an open mind.

To all the people saying I need a hardware store fund, you’re not joking about that.
i barely picked up my bass in the last 2 month. Instead I’ve replaced every single switch, receptacle, register vent. Knocked down a few walls and done more caulking than I had in an entire lifetime!

The "hardware store" fund thing is completely true. My wife and I just bought a new construction house, and even with that, I've been running to Lowe's every other day for something. We've always lived in apartments, condos or townhouses, and there are so many more things you need to have on hand with a single-family home. Needless to say, my music equipment budget has lessened.

Go 4x10... Lots of options, great price point.
TC Electronic BQ500 + Used 4x10 and have lots of change left for tone control. There's an abundance of used 4x10s.
Get a proper speaker cable boomville awaits.
