Best 4 string for around $1500

If you are that new to it all, you sure as hell don't need a $1500 bass. Guys make a full time living on instruments that cost half as much. Anything over $1000 can be considered "top of the line." Most instruments that are much more than that are custom made, built by specialists or have...

Thinking of upgrading Jazz Bass pickups...

Sorry, it may not be the case with your bass. (Or you can return them). The new MIA standards come with CS pups. Play one and se if you like it.

Does seeing and hearing an elite bassist cure your GAS?

I have a different type of gas cure experience. I hear Victor Wooton playing all this amazing stuff on a bass that sounds toneless and it cures my gas for that bass. I love Les Claypool but his sound never inspired me to want his bass. I got a Rick because I love Chris Squires tone but my...

Thinking of upgrading Jazz Bass pickups...

I've used all 3 mentioned in the OP -- the dimarzios are nice with a more aggressive tone, which may or may no e desirable. . The CS were surprising wimpy. And the noiseless and kinda dull. So , depending on what you have now, it may not be an upgrade.

Do You Own Van Halen - Van Halen?

It was groundbreaking for sure. It was essentially party rock -- DLR brought a tongue in cheek vaudvillian aspect to it and Eddie was playing things that were completely innovative. Alex's playing was also exceptional in a bombastic sort of way. Love it hate it, it could not be denied.

    modifying hofner icon

I wouldn't mess with what that bass is. The Icon is a great bang for the buck and sounds no different than the higher priced Hofners. It's just made a little more cheaply. (Keeping in mind, they were always somewhat cheap basses). Just get the wiring repaired well and be done with it.

Do You Own Van Halen - Van Halen?

I never said he wasn't. I think 98% of the people here got that point, whether or not they agree with my complete analysis. There's just that 2% that are looking for a fight one way or another. That, I don't get. Sure, I can ignore it, and usually do. But sometimes, you have to call a bully...

Do You Own Van Halen - Van Halen?

Speak for yourself my friend. I've made my living as a musician for over 20 years , playing in various musical contexts . I'd go as far to say much of what I've done is in styles that Michael Anthony could not handle. (Unless you have some examples of him playing jazz or classical). Of...

Do You Own Van Halen - Van Halen?

I don't think anyone should or would feel like a bum for having a perspective, regardless of who may or may not agree with it. Im not sure which opinions you think are half baked but it sounds like your comment could have used a bit more thought. : )

Do You Own Van Halen - Van Halen?

Here's the disconnect... People tend to think in absolutes. This seems to have become an argument over whether MA sucks or is a genius. He is neither. His part in Beautiful Girls is fine. A lot of his parts are fine. That's not the issue. The guy at the diner down the block from me makes...

    Are you compressor-less??

What a lot of people don't realize is that even iin recordings from the 60's where the bass is super punchy, c a form of compression was used. The problem is, today, so many recording squish the bass so that it's all one level and the end result is that no notes stand out. It's just a lot of...
