I currently own a Ibanez Mikro Bass. I love it. I just picked up a used SX P-bass with Rio Grande pickups installed. The sound is superb. I may put some Geezer Butler pickups in it at some point.

For that "growl", I would have to go with Dunlop Super Bright Nickels. DR Fat Beams are nice as well.

The other bass player at my church plays a short scale Hofner-style bass. It's got a nice thumpy tone to it and it's extremely light. Whatever floats your boat.

I own a humble Squier VM Jazz and a GRS205 that I recently turned into a fretless. They get the job done. *shrugs*
