    Learning to transcribe bass lines: How do you hear the root when it isn't the first note?

    Practicing the modes was critical for me to be able to detect where I am in relation to the root note. Sometimes, though, I still need to see it on paper, because of substitutions and inferences.

    Need Chair Recommendations for Bass Practice (Bulging Disc/Back Pain)

    The only thing that I can suggest is that rather than buying an expensive custom seat, buy a bunch of throw-pillows at Goodwill. I have at least six of them on my Serta desk chair, that, while not a recliner, does tilt.

    Lark Bass

    I had a black one in 1979-80. It was not expensive, about $150.00 without a case. It had a pretty nice feel and seemed pretty solid. Maybe Japanese?

    You want a portable stereo with audio out? The SONY CFD-G500 is a good choice.

    Joey Molland, of Badfinger, RIP

    Joey Molland played guitar all his life. He co-wrote a lot of the Badfinger tunes, and kept the band going after Pete Ham had died. I'll remember him most for his melodic motifs that were neither lead nor rythym, strictly-speaking. A friendly, good guy.

    Do you install fresh strings on a bass you're going to sell/trade?

    "Sell"? What do you mean by "sell"?

    Do you care about song lyrics?

    The story being told by the singer is what most people pay attention to the most, either live or in a recording. There are two types of musicians; those with nothing to say and those with something to say. Some musicians are unable to write decent lyrics. Those are the ones focused solely on the...

    Line-Level Out?

    I have never used a "jam-along jack" before, but am searching for a cassette/cd portable player that has this audio line out to plug into my bass amp, which has Aux in. I have looked around at "boom-boxes", but have found no Panasonics with this feature. Any leads on where to look?

    Let's See Your Hot-Rodded Cheapo Basses!

    1994 transparent blue Washburn XB-400 I had modified with Bartolini soap-bars and Bartolini NTBT preamp. So the same setup as the American-made XB-900. Hipshot de-tuner. Work done by Jim Mouradian of Cambridge, Mass.

    What bass is this? Lee Sklar, Phil Collins Live 1990

    This may be the first time I've seen Lee with a 24-fret bass.

    "Clickety-clack": Bad Technique or Set-Up

    I've found that a weak fretting (non-dominant) hand that causes this. Hand-strengthening exercises help, as do lighter-guage strings, which I don't have to wrestle to the ground as much.

    "Clickety-clack": Bad Technique or Set-Up

    That's interesting, because the axe that really sounds like a freight train when I open up and play fast is my G&L SB-1

    "Clickety-clack": Bad Technique or Set-Up

    I totally agree. Rock n' Roll came here to shake things up, and so did my bass tone. It's a percussive thing that I think helps the music, even though the overtones might be noticeable in some instances. I'll bet there is even a way to alter/record the rattly part of the sound to get the...
