When I tried one it was anything but normal sounding, it's good as an effect but I wouldn't want to use it instead of retuning, an E shifted down to B on the Drop sounds very different to B on a 5 string.

I've got B-1005, before buying it I played loads of basses in the same price range (around £1100) Ibanez, Fender, Lakland, Spector etc and the LTD was the best of the bunch, great sounding EMG pickups, perfectly balanced without a strap, low action without buzzing. Can't go wrong with LTD imo...

I use mine just for effects as well, you can even use 3 of the effect.

Not always that simple, I play a lot of stuff without retuning but sometimes you just have to, this Royal Blood song for example http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/r/royal_blood/ten_tonne_skeleton_btab.htm you need the open D to play the main riff.

I do them same, even if they're going back on the same bass it's much easier to reinstall on a top load bridge.

the problem would finding a B206 neck since ESP won't sell them & used ones don't seem to come up for sale that often, I had a B205 and for the price it was a great bass.

I'd go for the SR300 although you'd get a much better bass if you spent a bit more on a used SR500 or LTD B204, 34" scale will be fine for C & much lower.

most active basses have passive pickups with a seperate preamp, emg's active pickups are different they've got an internal preamp inside the pickup plus the normal preamp/eq, you can't bypass the internal preamp, so they cant be used without a battery.

Basses with active EMG's can't because they've got internal premaps.
