The ampeg and fender have very different character. Scooped and mid pushed. But the fender is more versatile bc of all the controls. I have an rb8" and fender 40, I prefer the ampeg though. Same applies to the higher end units though.

In the real weeds you have logarithmic vs linear sidechain time constants. But in order to get a linear attack and release time, you need digital elements in the SC or very complicated rectification circuitry. I'm not sure how it would sound as I've very little experience with linear time...

The port is tuned by its length and cross sectional area. The greater the area, the louder it can get before chuffing (port noise) and compression. But as area gets greater, the length must increase to remain at the same tuning. Area is related to diameter in this case, larger diameter=larger area.

Yeah that's roughly my reasoning for products like the BP1 as well though I see it has a transformer in it which would drive the costs to what they are. Then it becomes a discussion of whether the effect is worth that price. Note that I work in industry so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

It is my personal opinion that things like the BP1 are snake oil.

Well there's two rather specific plugins I'd recommend but IDK if they're real time: waves vitamin enhancer or variety of sounds xtc thrillseeker. These fall under enhancer plugins which are kind of wizardry imo but they can add presence in a way that neither eq nor distortion can.

I would say for EQ on a direct bass, you may find rules about which frequencies are muddy or articulation are different. For example I find I get a lot of clarity out of a DI'd bass at 400 believe it or not. I'm using j bass FTR.

I would start with optical because they're less finicky about attack and release. I believe the Cali76 is FET and most FET compressors distort a little.

It's likely the distortion itself. Most amps and amp sims contribute saturation to the signal. It may not sound distorted but it is. I find that this distortion sometimes masks or obscures the natural harmonics of the instrument. I would recommend experimenting with a compressor or graphic EQ...

Funny enough, lately that's exactly where I've been boosting. It lends a ton of definition in the mix for me. Yeah it's weird on its own but it cuts better that elsewhere in the mids cause most everything else is trying to cut there.

Thank you. I suppose when you use your ears you're already focused on listening more than playing. Funny enough I don't play with others too often (wonder why 🫣). I've been playing long enough that I could in rock and blues bands but it is true that bands require people to reign themselves in.
