Ampeg SGT-DI

That's terrible to hear. I wanted to pick one up for a different flavor to my Darkglass Infinity along with the rest of my board.
I think it depends. The SGT circuit does behave like an amp in that if you hit it hard you get more gain. Unfortunately I get too much gain for my tastes when trying that even with the gain knob minimized. Could be just what I want to hear.

Maybe someone else has had more success.

BTW the Origin Effects seems to handle pushing better, but it’s costly.

sorry if this has been covered -

I love the preamp sound I get from my scr-di. But I hate the scrambler and want to get a good mild overdrive and I’m tired of trying (and spending) od pedals and adding a cam sim pedal.

I want to get the sgt to cover that

My question - for those of you that have used both, can I get the same preamp sound on the sgt I get on my scr?

Thanks for any input

I have both and both preamps are very ampeg like. Though the preamp in the SGT has more flexibility with the mid control.
I never used grit on the scrambler because I did t like its character either.

The SCR-DI is used on my home board along with/ a Scrambler pedal [much better in pedal form] & Hagerman value. The SGT-DI is on my live & studio board along w/ a TC Spark, Edison, & Broughton HPF/LPF.

To my ears the SCR-DI has more upper mids, the SGT-DI has more focused lower mids. While both have Ampeg tone the SGT-DI is easier to dial in quickly, the sweepable mids add lots of adjustment, cab sims [if that's your thing] & the SGT circuit is a usable OD compared to the useless [IMO] Scrambler section of the SCR-DI.

While I use & enjoy both if I could only have one it would be the SGT-DI.

Just a follow up …

In case anyone is interested, I did get the Sgt and I can pretty much get the same preamp tone that I can on my scrdi - pretty much the same settings on the knobs too… very happy with that

Other thoughts

The tone changes a bit when you add in cab sims, which is not surprising but more in character and less in tone/balance.

The Sgt/od is nice but seems a little more bass heavy. Still usable but I may use it less than my svpreamp pedal…

Cab sims are pretty good. Def necessary with OD. Tried to connect to software but it couldn’t find my device…. Not sure what’s up with that

Also a little high pitched whine - tried the adapter it came with, my power brick. Really only noticable when not playing. Only played through headphones. We’ll see tonight if it comes through as much on xlr.

I just picked up one of these because I misplaced my VTBASS. yes I know.. that's a little bit much to spend on something because I simply misplaced .. a pedal.

but. OMG.

Im so glad I did. Never have I had so much fun playing bass. This thing sings. I feel like im different guy playing a different bass.. like something was unleashed inside me that comes out of my instrument that I was not expecting. I can't explain it. But I find myself pumping out notes that I never have playing the same songs. Like, "oh why not just slide up and grab the octave A on the 12th, then blast out an open string A and slide up to the A on E" instead of just being bored playing A on the E blasting some 8th notes. I feel like a kid again.. and its all thanks to a Squier P-Bass, some Labellas and a SGT DI.

Epically, I have ditched my PF-500 and Fearful 15/6/1 and Im just rocking a Rumble 100 now. And somehow, dropping 200 watts and half the cabinet with a 12 instead sounds and feels bigger. I have some big gigs coming up with PA support and have no qualms about coming into the gig one trip with the Rumble, the pedal board and a p-bass slung over my back.

Lets talk about gain structure and musicman basses. My musicman bass is too hot for the pedal. Dimmed all the way, nothing. Turn it up any and its already distorting and hitting the compressor hard. SGT is fuzz.. Ive tried just about everything. This thing only likes passive fender bass. Musicman fender bass is like kryptonite.

Ugh, I have NOT been able to use my musicman bass at all with this pedal. It lacks clean headroom for that without a pad. But Ampeg makes a solution, and I found one for $75. The Classic Preamp pedal. it has a -15dB pad internally dip switchable. So I enabled that and now I can make the volume change I need and also nudge the EQ in the direction I need for a good sound. The EQ Points are ampeg so its like making the same changes on the SGT-DI using the Classic preamp pedal instead.

Very nice you were able to find a solution, and an Ampeg solution at that.

I'm considering an Ampeg RB-210 amp vs a Fender Rumble 800. I have an Ampeg Scrambler pedal, and am wondering how that compares with the SGT circuit (assuming the RB-210 has the same SGT circuit as the SGT-DI, possibly an incorrect assumption). From reading a number of posts here, it seems that the Scrambler circuit in the SCR-DI was weak, but that the SGT circuit in the SGT-DI is good. Does anyone know if there's any commonality between the circuits in these three products (Scrambler, SGT-DI, RB-210)? I'm thinking since I already have the Scrambler, that the Rumble may be the better choice for me, as I already like several of its features (including the 29lb weight!)

I can’t comment as to if the amp shares the same circuitry to the pedal 100% for sure but I can say I have the BA210 with scrambler channel I never use. I’ve read it’s the same circuit as the scr-di so venture to guess the rb210 has the same sgt circuit as the pedal. And I own a Rumble 500. I prefer Ampeg tones live with a band and my 210 weighs 48 lbs, had it for 8 years and it’s never let me down on a gig. The rb210 is already lighter than my amp and has the better circuit. I use the rumble at home and leave the Ampeg in the trailer. Extra info…I actually use the SGT pedal on a board with other pedals and that goes to FOH. I use the ba210 for my stage amp and I can adjust knobs all gig long if I want not effecting FOH tone much at all really.

I bought and used this di awhile back and since starting building a new home, everything got packed away. I got the di out last night to experiment with. I really like this thing! I pretty much set the eq flat, dial in the compressor to only flicker on occasionally and then use the ultra low switch for different tones and the eq dialed to the room. Using the comp so sparingly gives this unit that familiar Ampeg slight squish that I loved so much with the svp-cl and my current V4B reissue. I did download some free it’s from the shiftline page which are WAAAAAYYYYY better than the stock loaded ones. I would like to find some others if anyone has a lead on some, paid or free.

The ampeg and fender have very different character. Scooped and mid pushed. But the fender is more versatile bc of all the controls. I have an rb8" and fender 40, I prefer the ampeg though. Same applies to the higher end units though.
