Ampeg SGT-DI

Oh, I also ran the sgt-di into the fx return of my rumble 500 210 combo and much prefer the sound and feel compared to the rumbles preamp section. It’s a good pairing. It also sounds better than running the Ampeg into the fenders preamp with truly “flat” setting because, even with the flat setting there is a slight wide bump around 200hz and a roll of of upper treble which effects the tone and feel.

I have the same 500c/SGT-DI setup.

It's here!! NPD

Initial impressions very positive, will need some time with it at home and at church to dial in tones. Next, loading in my 3 favourite cab IRs (although one of the user ones is quite good). Also getting to understand the gain staging is going to be important...

Happy!

Here are some beauty shots out of the box

Congrats! Yes, the gain stages take a minute to comprehend but they make sense pretty quickly. Enjoy all the great tones!

I had to buy the blue edition as well. The only downside is it's hard to see the marks on the silver knobs on stage, or even at home. So I added black tape strips to help with that.

I've had mine for about half a year and absolutely love it. I'm constantly playing around with the IRs I can change. Which 3 cab IRs are you going to use?

Is that a new amp, @2saddleslab ?

Here's a song, Small Things, from our new double EP release Like A River [Electric Stories, Vol. 1] Coming Around [Acoustic Stories, Vol.2]. We've always been a fan of Bill Withers and this song is a nod to his acoustic soul vibe.

It was recorded w/ the SGT-DI, using the B15 [grit @ 9:00, level @ 1:00] for a bit of OD. The signal chain: 51/55 P bass - Edison - HPF/LPF - SGT-DI - direct to the board.

You're not kidding, the the marks are super subtle/invisible! I might take a sharpie (gasp!) to them
I thought of doing the same but decided to try the tape first. So far the tape has held. Also thought about trying to source the black knobs like those found on the OG SGT-DI. But that might lose some of the blue anniversary charm of the silver knobs.

How much clean headroom does the overdrive circuit have? Does it get totally clean dialed down? I found that with my Ampeg Rocket I couldn't get the drive quite as subtle as I would have liked, and the drive overall was only okay. I'm looking at getting one of these, but if it can't do my preferred "edge of breakup" sound, I might look at the Origin Bassrig instead...

Hi guys, I have received my Ampeg SGT-DI a couple of weeks ago, it sounds great with my Fender AM II Precision, but I have a problem with the compressor which I cannot explain. I set the general volume of the preamp stage, the EQ and the compression level (around 12 o’clock), and everything works, with the compressor led activating every now and then while I play. Then, I switch the SGT circuit ON, setting a medium grit level. I want to have the same average output volume with the SGT ON and OFF, and to achieve this I have to set the level knob of the SGT at a low position, as the SGT circuit acts as a booster. The result is that I can switch the overdrive ON and OFF with the same output volume. But, doing so, the compressor is more active when the SGT circuit is ON, even if I play much harder than with the SGT OFF. To see again the led of the compressor active, I need to increase the level of the SGT circuit, but in such a way the resulting output volume is much higher with the SGT ON.

The SGT circuit is before the compressor/volume section, so it seems that when I turn the level of the SGT section low, the compressor cannot be activated anymore because the input signal is always below the threshold. But I still have the same output volume… how is this possible? Is the compressor sensitive to the level of the SGT circuit only, not to the grit level (which also boosts the output volume?

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I find the on-board compressor to be near useless, and I just leave it off and use a separate pedal (a UA La-2A, specifically).
