I use .50-.110 DR Black Beauties on my Ibanez and tune to BEAD. The tension is at least as good as when I had .65-.130 Ken Smith Bass Burners on my old ltd, and it plays really well, so I'd say it also depends on what instrument you are using. Buy a couple of different gauges and see what works...
