I've been putzing with this for a while, but the recent passing of Wilde Bill Lawrence has spurred me into gear. So, please pardon the NQF. Still have to wire it and make a few key items, but it tunes up and plays pretty okay so far with junk hardware I had laying around.

Since I don't get to "living inherit" the instrument I cut my teeth on (my dad's '73 "Phil Lynott" black-on-maple Precision) I decided to turn half of a cherry '51 P reissue I'd dissected into a tribute.

Before it was refinished, my dad's bass had a handmade cover made of B/W/B/ pickguard material on the upper horn...like a funky Precision/Telecaster Bass hybrid. One day I took it off and found a hand-carved rooster standing in corn stalks underneath. It looked pretty gnarly, and at the time of course, "Rooster" by AIC was dominating the airwaves so I thought it was awesome. Anyway, it got filled in and forgotten about during the re-fin. I'd never asked him about it or what it meant.

Regarding the pickup scheme: I liked the "mojo" factor of Warmoth's P rout + '72 Tele, plus I figured the '51 P headstock would work better with this scheme AND it would all work as tribute to the old configuration of pops' bass. I originally wanted to add a mudbucker under the neck. No matter where I sketched it out though, it just didn't look "right" because the Warmoth pickguard is more narrow than the OG (to fit between the neck and the P rout). Eventually I thought "what about a P/J set but reversed?" I emailed Bill & Becky Lawrence and asked them if they thought a P plus a neck J would work. Becky emailed back and said they thought it would be better if it was a bridge J, so he graciously custom wound a bridge J inside a neck J shell. Cool, right??

Another cool thing which worked out is that the pickup configuration ends up as "JP," which are my dad's initials, ha!

I cannot wait to wire this thing plug this thing in. Originally I wasn't going to get too kinky about individual pickup phase splitting, but now I think I'll figure it into the plan as a salute to Bill.

Oh, as far as the rooster, I finally asked my dad a few months ago when I got the idea for this. In his words:

"tried for dove and olive branches
talk about abject failure"

:)

Sorry for the word diarrhea. Back to work on this! So far, the 6x 1/4"-20 neck bolt scheme along with the laserlike Warmoth pocket is SPOOKY tight and keeps everything locked like crazy. More to come...

Hey, I love this bass! Do you often use the pickups in conjunction? How do you like the Neck J on it's own? I was thinking of doing something similar, but PJP. I love the sound of a far-north neck pickup. I'm thinking I'd wire it passive V/V/T with a 2-way switch before the 1st Volume to select either the Neck J or the P. That selection would run to the 1st volume and could either be soloed or blended with the Bridge J volume. Your input would be appreciated!

Mr. Walker,

Sorry, I did not see this when you posted it. Have you gotten anywhere with (the instrument you were planning)? I like your switchable J Bridge or P plan. If you have room for another mini switch, you might consider a second switch to split the the P by itself (see below).

The J solo in this position is interesting - it has a really good bottom end, but still with a bit of that "hollow" Bridge J sound. I guess like an older/more experienced Bridge J? Haha.

I've found myself using just the Wilde P so far - it spits fire and has such a crazy dynamic range that I'm still getting used to it. The sound is perfect P, and for straight-up rock and roll it's totally amazing. For everything else it's like trying to do Lasik eye surgery with an Oxy-acetylene torch....this is why I might try a coil splitter as per above.

With both (in plain 'ol parallel), it has an AWESOME Tim Commerford-esque grind!

At any rate, I'm a mostly-lifelong JJ person and don't miss having a bridge pickup at all. Food for thought?

I am bad at photos...here it is all together from a while ago.
