So i got a fretless bass as a teenager and later on I change the strings to half-wound/groundwounds. No idea what brand or gauge (let's call it my mystery set). Fast forward fifteen years, I decide to start experimenting with strings and I went heavy into flats (every gauge of Labellas, plus GHS, Fender, and Chromes). I ended up getting a set of D'Addario Half Rounds too at some point.
I don't really play the fretless when playing in a group, but it was my first bass and I still like tooling around with it at home. At some point the G string of my Mystery set broke at the long end (which is strange because out of the dozens of strings I own none of the others have ever broken) but hey they were old strings. But the other strings are still good, and have 15+ years of history with me playing on them. So i put them back on, and just used the D'Addario half round G I had, but I notice that it is definitely NOT the same set.
First, the D'Addario strings look almost a little more bronze compared to the Mystery set, they are both silver but the D'Addarios look a little less like true silver. Second, at least the G string on the two sets are definitely not the same gauge, the D'Addario's are a medium gauge and so the G at 50 is noticeably bigger than the G on the Mystery set. I can't tell if the Mystery is a 45 or a 40, but the E string appears to be about the same size on both sets.
Any good bass detectives here know how to sleuth out what kind of strings are on my mystery set? I know there are D'Addarios and GHS Brite flats, any other suspects? Any other likely gauges?
Thanks for your help!
