The Official Short Scale Bass Club -- Part 4

Working on a Gretsch G2220, about half way done. Gave it a face lift. Still waiting on a few parts. Putting Gold Hardware on, Hipshot tuners, Omega Bass Bridge (waiting for it), VVT (waiting on parts), and CTS pots and PIO cap. When all done will post some pics.

Unfortunately, I had a look at the Chowny thread in the BassChat forum. They have posted pictures of the production prototype of the UK made CHB-1. The most beautiful blue burst I have ever seen and they have got the weight down to 7.5 lbs. GAS get thee behind me!

Wow! That is like a completely different guitar now! As I discovered when I tinkered with a G2220, you will need to get US Gretsch control knobs to fit on the CTS shafts: cost me almost £30 this side of the pond!

There seem to be quite a few on auction sites. Some people find the lack of an arm contour (on the upper bout of the slab body) uncomfortable for extended playing.

Yep, actually found some gold arrow logo knobs on eBay just waiting for them

My CHB-1 is pretty easy to play so long as I don't attempt to treat it like a FSO. I looked at a lot of photos of Jack Casidy to get an idea how to hold it. Lighter would be a great benefit.

One more pic, second pickup in, (TV Jones) and homemade thumb rest. Now wait for parts to finish

I too have newly acquired a Gretsch (mine is an "electromatic junior jet" shortie) and I am curious as to pickup and bridge used. I have been fascinated by the bridge on my Epi EB-0 but it is quite a bit of structure. Which bridges did you consider when you were thinking out your upgrade and which bridge and pickups (and other upgrades coming) have you decided to install...if you don't mind some questions from the ill informed here? Thanks in advance!

Not at all, same Bass happy to pass on lessons learned and info.
Mods I did and reasons:
1. Gold Hardware, just like the look, pure personal preference
2. "Omega Bass Bridge, with grooved saddles" Ebay, got the grooved saddles easier to align strings with pole pieces.
3. CTS pots and Paper in oil capacitor, just like the progression and tone. If you go with CTS pots will have to enlarge the pot holes in the Bass to 3/8 inch.
4. VVT wiring, I prefer the options of being able to mix the pickups to more than one setting. I used a 1/2" OD to 3/8" ID O ring as a spacer around the pot bushing in the switch hole where I put the tone pot
5. Hipshot HB6-Y tuners with 3/8"shaft. Much smoother than stock tuners.
6. Pickups are all personal preference, a lot of people really like the stock ones, I like the TV Jones thunder Mag, just more defined. Works great with VVT and another pickup to color the tone. If you do this will have to file/sand the inside of the pickup rings to fit, not much but a little
7. Made a thumb rest, I just am more comfortable with one. the one I made requires no new holes, using the pickup ring screws to mount it.

Think that's everything, any questions please ask, happy to pass on lessons learned.
