New Harley Benton product: a baby jazz bass, JB-62CC Mini SP

20053874.jpg

Just saw this pop up on the HB new products page. What do we think? I'm assuming it's tuned an octave above normal since it seems to have normal strings and a 23" scale length. Looks pretty well made compared to a lot of ultra short-scale options. Thinking getting one of these and an octave pedal could be a funny travel option.

Here's a fatter, and also more expensive option out there:
a type of unconventional steel-core string is one designed to specifically address inharmonicity, by means of making the diameter larger just ahead of the bridge saddle (lumped strings). This approach was introduced by Kemp Strings, a company which, amongst other products, happens to make a set for bass-octave EADG tuning on instruments with scale lengths as short as 16"-18", the MüB-E (058-077-103-138), 4-string version

designed for the MüB Miezo 16", Miezo 18" and X3M 18" mini-bass models by Maurizio Über Basses.

Now, a 22.75" scale version of that set is available on the latter company's webpage, at this link

Back to the mini-Jazz bass -
the Flight Mini JB is double the price, but a little more visually appealing, to this (g)uy at least:

I saw this when they tease it on their website! Can't wait to check out the videos.
Ton's of cheap mini jazz copies exist, CNZ audio was a pretty good one and some kind people ran it.
However I always have to give the edge to Harley Benton.
If I had money now I would get a Fender Junior Japanese Shortscale Jazz but for now - the Benton will do!

Interesting tip... I wonder if they have a set for the Mayones Cali 4 ?

The shortest version would appear to be a fit.
However, for such a non-insignificant sum of money, I would make sure to contact them (Maurizio Über Basses, who does the selling) first, and provide all the relevant measurements (ball to nut, i.e. minimum full-winding length; ball to nearest tuning post, i.e. maximum full-winding length).

Thanks, I will do that. I just wonder if those strings might add some more bass frequency to the very high Cali 4, which is amazing for what it is, but it's not deep bass and I have not found a really natural sounding octave pedal that doesn't give that dirty synth sound.

Anyone here have the Gold Tone mini bass? Comes in two scale sizes. I played one in a store a few months ago and liked it a lot. Way better than my UBass.

Here is one of them
