What's the shiny stuff on the back of my pickguard? I switched out pickguards and the old one had the material on the back but the new one doesn't. Is this stuff necessary ?

I ordered a p bass today and the store said fender had it in stock. They never gave me an estimate on the delivery date. How long does the shipping process take? Never had a problem with the store in 20 years so they're not shady. I'm hoping to get it by this weekend.
