    Tuning up to drop C?

Although this is technically correct, it won't be very practical if the songs are constantly "bouncing" off the low C. In fact, some riffs may virtually impossible without an open C. To the OP, I find the best way of dealing with drop C (or C#) on a 5 or 6 string is to capo the first fret. Of...

Why Jeff Berlin should be president of all music education

Am I reading this correctly? Did he really say no one should play fretless, or ERBs, or was that just an example? If so, thats just ridiculous. Also, where are the discussions he had with Steve Bailey people have been mentioning, I wouldn't mind seeing them.

+1 to everything doug said, just thought I'd add that he walks up to an F7 in the last bar before resolving back to the verse.

Ibanez btb 556, is it worth it?

Was the BTB on ebay a neck through, or a bolt on like this one? Would definitely line you up man, but there is another buyer (personal friend) who'll buy it if I don't. However, if THAT falls through as well I'll let the seller know you're interested. Does anyone have any more information on...

Thanks for the response. Haha, don't really mind if my bass looks like satan, I suppose it could look worse!

Ibanez btb 556, is it worth it?

A friend offered to sell me his 6 string Ibanez btb 556 (which I'm pretty sure is the older, bolt on version of the 676). He's asking $600 AUD ($550 USD) with hardcase, do you guys think this is a good deal? It's in great condition, Korean made late 2007/early 2008 model with Bartolini MK1s...

Low action, string noise, and a light touch?

What do you consider to be a "low action", do you know what height you have your strings set at the 12th fret? Also, do you prefer to have a fairly flat neck? Thanks!

    6 string bass case...?

Hey, I'm looking to find a decent hardshell case for my RBXJM2 (Yamaha 6 string), and nothing seems to fit, i.e Hisicox, Gator. The main problem seems to be the body width, the upper bout is almost 13", and the lower is almost 14". Also, the headstock is 6" from the B peg to the C peg. Does...

Tuning - Let the games begin

I'd just play in standard, or if they use the open c alot I'd tune the B up a half step or capo the first fret.

    First jamming session

A five string isn't really a subsitute for drop tuning. There's plenty of songs in drop D which would physically impossible on a 5 string in standard tuning.

REQ: 'Edge of my blade' by Seventh Wonder

Hey, you still interested? I don't have EOMB, but can have a go at the intro if you want. But there's tab for Walking Tall, Day By Day, In The Blink Of An Eye, and A Day Away maybe more. WT, ADA, and ITBOAE are by Andreas himself, so they're very accurate. I'm working on Banish The Wicked and...

make me into a remarkable bassist

Don't become a purely rhythmic/harmonic bass player, who's willing to play purely root notes or "catchy grooves" no matter what the context. Explore equally (or at least partly) the melodic possibilities of the instrument.

    Boss DB30

Hey, just had a quick question regarding the Boss DB-30 metronome. I'm thinking of ordering one at my local store, but need to know if for instance I set it to play 5 beats, can I then set it to play triplets over that? Like do the rhythm and beat features work together, or are they separate...

How often do you guys use the upper fret (or, Should I learn on a violin bass ?)

I spend a fair amount of time on the upper frets, but that's really because of my style. I like to treat it as an instrument like any other, i.e there's no reason why is should hold down the low end most of the time. It really depends on your style of playing...

Suggestions for the best way to learn note positions on the fretboard?

I wrote this a while ago for a friend, just before I fully managed to comprehend the CAGED system. The idea is that you can learn any scale very quickly and apply it anywhere. Although, it is by no means a replacement for learning the fretboard properly, It's more of a shortcut... That friend...

    Speed-sters

Not really, the fastest bassists in the world mainly use there fingers, I think the only pick play up there is John Alderete, and he only gets about 14nps if I remember correctly.

    Speed-sters

No problem. :) It really depends on what you find most natural. Personally I go ring-mid-index, but some people find the other variations easier. The one thing I will advise against is index-mid-ring-mid, because it at least partially defeats the purpose of this technique (you're still using...

    Speed-sters

Maybe because thats how the piece was written? Don't be so narrow minded. TS, although this speed is definitely accomplishable with two fingers, you may notice very quick improvement in your speed if you start to use three, in a strict 3-2-1-3-2-1 pattern. Keep practicing!

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

I'm having a bit of trouble with the old never ending battle between playability and buzz. I play more neoclassical/progressive metal then death metal, so often my bass isn't completely obliterated by the guitars, there's often spots where it's just me and the drummer, maybe with some keyboard...

    Metronomes...

Yeah I was thinking of that, but most of them are really hip-hop/techno orientated, and are often a bit overpriced. Of course, if I found one I could quickly program complex meters into and have it play some kind of standard beat, that would be cool. Thanks man.

    Metronomes...

I'm looking at getting a half decent metronome, my current one is just horrible to use. Something that has headphone output, volume control and isn't completely ear piercing would be preferable. Also, something which I can program a chain of time signatures into, e.g 7/8 alternating with 11/8...

    is this right?

In my opinion, shredding is just a colloquial term for someone or something that is virtuosic or requires virtuosic ability to play. That being said, often things labeled as shred aren't actually all that virtuosic. Actually, there's a fair few bassist labeled as virtuosic who really aren't...

    is this right?

I don't see how it's bad. See the bass as an instrument, not just a "bass".
  27. B

    Man, small arms.

I find the best hight is to have the bass at the same angle/hight as when you are sitting down. Sit down with your strap on, and when you stand up the bass shouldn't move it all.

    Weird 3 finger style issue(maybe)

I think this actually the reason a lot of myths get thrown around about 4 finger bass players. Some bass players really look like they're using 4, because there pink curls up this way, like John Myung.

Bach Cello Suite #1 Prelude In G Major who can play it?

Fair enough. I think it's that typical 3nps tapping that's consists mostly of pull-offs that makes tapping unmusical. I find that an 8 finger, chapman like approach can be used well when interpreting Bach, some of his piano pieces transcribe very well. I see what you meant though.

Bach Cello Suite #1 Prelude In G Major who can play it?

Why? Tapping is a valid technique, and there's some stuff which would be almost impossible without it.

    Highest tension B string or a 5er?

Thanks for the insight. If I was looking at getting my action as low as possible (yes I play "flashy" tapping stuff that's not very practical at all, I admit it) would a heavier B be better? I imagined more tension would mean the string moves less, and I can get it closer to the fretboard. From...

    Absolute pitch (my own effort)

I've been trying to improve my relative pitch over the last few days, and I can easily identify any interval up to a 5th, but m6, 6, m7, 7 are all giving me a lot of trouble. I can hear major 6th and 7th but when I exclude the minor 6th and 7th from the test, but as soon as I add them I only...

Bach Cello Suite #1 Prelude In G Major who can play it?

What would be the "correct" octave to play it in? I find it easier to play it with the first note on the open G. I can play most of the piece now, it's just a few of the ascending runs that I'm yet to learn. I've found a nice way to interpret the first few bars of the piece is to play the first...

    Tapping.

It really depends on what style of tapping you use, you could practice the typical 3 note per a string legato patterns, but this can get pretty boring in the context of a song IMO. One exercise I do to practice my 8 finger dexterity is this minor third patter which ascends chromatically. For...

    Plucking help...

Yeah, I can certainly hear where you're coming from in terms of the finger slapping, however I think this is the cause of that clicking sound I mentioned earlier. My main problem is I can't produce any sort of clarity with short-nailed normal finger style. Myung achieves this incredibly clarity...

    Trouble with Raking

For me raking comes naturally, and in some ways I wish it didn't, it really inhibits my 3 finger technique. But for some stuff it's pretty much necessary, like the arpeggios from Paganini's 24th caprice, or some off your more technical, proggy stuff.
