    Reading music

Yeah both electric bass and upright double bass have the same pitch as the tuba but written an octave up I guess to avoid excessive use of ledger lines below the staff, I could see them wanting to save ink, but I never liked that it was written an octave up. I would have always rather had it...

Leading finger (3 finger tech) - best for beginner?

lol yeah thats pretty much what I am doing right now but I won't be satisfied unless I can have an attack on almost every note in the song just like he does. 8 years of being perfectly fine with two fingers and now i'm pretty much back to the drawing board again relearning everything my right...

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

Holy cow I didn't realize that I said 32nds, I meant 16ths, that would be gay if I thought I could do 32nds at that tempo, my mistake, i'm sorry

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

Ok I done a little research, Dyers Eve is 194bpm and Silent Scream is 196bpm and it would take playing them at least several times back to back before my fingers start aching and slowing down considerably.

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

Ok my mistake, I may need to check my sources on the bpm being 200. The songs I was talking about playing was the Metallica song Dyers Eve and the Slayer song Silent scream. Both of those at least have to be above 180bpm though and not only can I keep up with the double bass in both but I can...

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

alright ill get a video camera off someone and see what I can do, but it shouldn't be too uncommon people reaching those speeds with 2 fingers. Cliff Burton was rumored to do it though I never actually saw video or heard him but I have heard Rob Trujillo do it before.

Leading finger (3 finger tech) - best for beginner?

It will be a WHILE before I can do it, I have to pretty much master the 3 finger technique so my right hand can actually play it, thats not gonna happen anytime soon lol. I have the Finale file of what I have done so far if you or anybody would like to see I can send it via email.

    am I a 4-stringer for life?

I have done the same but I always keep coming back to 4 strings. For me it is the overall feel of the bass, I am most comfortable with the width of the strings on 4 string basses more than I am the standard string width on 5 and 6 strings, too close together for my taste. Also having a slimmer...

Leading finger (3 finger tech) - best for beginner?

I used to use only two fingers and was attemping stuff like 16th notes at 200+ bpm but anywhere near that kind of speed wasnt really needed until now. I recently transcribed Michael Angelo Batio's solo piece No Boundries to 4 string bass of course displacing some octaves just so it will all fit...

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

its not hard to do, but anybody just cant do it over night, this comes from years and years of playing as fast as possible and building up the speed to do it. but here recently it has been getting rediculous, I transcribed No Boundaries by Michael Angelo Batio to bass and had to displace a few...

    Passive vs Active

Yea I noticed the same thing, passives seem more agressive on the low end and smoother on the top, from my experience it is hard to get an active to sing smooth like the passives do up on the 15th-20th frets on d and g string unless you do some serious tweaking on amp or bass settings, actives...

    Passive vs Active

What is everybodys opinion on passive basses compared to active basses and the pros and cons of each talking about all aspects of playing them both wether it be blending in with the band, soloing up high on the fret board, their sound in general, clarity, low end, anything.

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

I have reached speeds over 200bpm 16th notes with only two fingers and built my endurance to where I could just keep it going all day and not get that tired, very hard and lots of pain to get it like that though.

    coated string and grounding!?

have the bass looked at, mine did the same thing and im pretty sure the strings would have nothing to do with that.
  17. M

    New Strings = Finger Pain!!!!

elixers will feel smooth because they are a coated string where as d'addario strings are not so if you are used to the coated feel they will be a bit rougher but no matter what you play you can get used to it.

    Nickel Roundwounds Help

I have been using Ernie Ball nickel roundwound slinkys for a long time now playing stuff such as: ALL Metallica, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Rush, Iron Maiden, Steve Vai and a few others, but I mainly play Metallica. I also tend to use a Sansamp Bass...

Demystifying Metal styles, how to make fingerstyle playing heard in Metal

When it comes to the really fast runs going over multiple octaves all I can use is my fingers. I can't see how anybody in the world can use a pick but then again some ppl don't see how I use my fingers. I don't think fingers or picks matters, neither is better than the other, its all personal...

yea the CS sounds like just what I am looking for. just wondering this may sound like a dumb question, but the 40P is that supposed to be a humbucker thats supposed to be close to a P pickup in sound? and yea thats right the MM sweet spot technically isnt at the bridge its away from it a bit...

EMG pickups for 5 string bass

yea i want the fullest sounding pickups I can find, thats why im not considering any J pickups, they seem to not have the fullness I am looking for. I am looking to buy EMG humbucker style pickups for a 5 string bass and there are so many different models to choose from. The models I am looking at are the 40P5, 40DC, and 40CS pickups. EMG pickup for Music Man Stingray 5

From playing Music Man Stingray 5 basses I love their sound by far over any other active bass i've ever played. They have the same high output, bright sounds, and clarity that I guess are characteristics that all the active basses i've played share, but the Stingrays seem different to me though...

    Rob Trujillo strings.

Depends on what year you heard Rob play, around 2004 after he first joined Metallica and on tour in 2006 he used Dean Markley nickel strings. Sometime in 2009 he was endorsed by Dunlop and they made the Rob Trujillo signature steel strings which I think is what he used in the Death Magnetic...

He used a bone stock Rickenbacker 4001 and sometime i dont know if it was during the Kill em All tour or before or after they recorded the album im not sure but he did switch to Gibson EB-0 neck and Dimarzio J bridge pickup. You can tell because on Cliff em All when it shows the band still with...

    Fender 7150M vs. Rotosound RS66LDN

Everyone here is absolutely right. I tried the Fender pure nickel 7150 strings and they still didn't give me what I was looking for. I started this thread because I could not find any thread about this, I already searched all Cliff Burton threads that I could find. Cliff Burton fuzzy recordings

On the Metallica albums Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, I listened to a few of Cliff's bass tracks on certain songs and I noticed that his sound is always fuzzy and alot of the times muffled, why is that so? It seems listening to the albums that his bass sound has clarity and is just...

    Cliff Burton using flatwounds

I was told by someone that on the Kill em' All recordings that Cliff Burton used flatwound strings. Is this true? Here are some sound samples: It is almost believable that Cliff did use flatwounds on Kill em' All because IMHO on the bass track it sounds like some flatwound strings I...

So what was the final consensus on why Newstead was mixed out of AJFA??

Yeah isn't that the truth? The only songs Metallica did that I think the bass was mixed good in was Hit the Lights, Four Horsemen, and Crashcourse in Brain Surgery. If every song had the bass mix those 3 songs had who knows how much more awesome it would have been. I think someone should start a...

So what was the final consensus on why Newstead was mixed out of AJFA??

And thats just another reason to why Kill 'em All is my favorite Metallica album. Although hearing the amazing bass sound Cliff had on that album and the fact that I believe all 10 of those songs are probably my top 10 Metallica songs really helps too, lol.

    Bass Guitar in Classical Music

But we still...

    Bass Guitar in Classical Music

So what was the final consensus on why Newstead was mixed out of AJFA??

I agree with alot of what you said about Kill em All. That is the best Metallica sounded as a band, I love hearing the bass perfectly mixed with the guitars and drums like it is on Kill em all, and the Gibsons through the Marshalls did sound awesome. I also agree that James and Kirk's sound did...
