I've never bought an Amp before any basic recomendations?

Thanks I'm checking the Fender site now, I don't really know how watts effects the volume of the amp or sound if it all. I'm not looking for anything too big, or too loud Fender has alot of different rumble cabs and I don't know which size would be best, how much does the voltage effect the...

I've never bought an Amp before any basic recomendations?

When I first started playing Bass guitar, I purchased a "Fender"/Squire starter thing. A Squire MII J bass and a tiny Fender practice amp. While I've used the tiny Fender amp for playing live in a small club setting set to max volume, and been able to stay at a good volume and breakthrough the...

Thanks, I was wondering about the one with the different pickup placement for the mudbucker. Seems very interesting. Are they very common I see them on reverb allot?

Drake Custom Bass Guitars ~FOR SALE~

On his website he's selling a five'r for around $2000, very cheap for a Drake! if only I could afford it. I guess before I look to suck expensive purchases I should get a job.

    70s Gibson EB-3s

I've seen the 70s EB-3s, and I saw the pickup placement is different, however I've never heard one. How does the sound differ. Are there any classic rock tunes that have 70s EB-3s on them?

It's not the Bass, it's you

I think this is 100% correct. If you're action is high you won't be able to play as precise. If your neck is uncomfortable you won't be able to be as precise. . Sure a professional set up could lower the action, but the most important thing is getting a bass that allows you to be the other 85%...

Need a Second Bass that is NOT Fender - Suggestions?

If you hadn't said weight I'd say a vintage Kramer, they were made with active electronics, in the later years, and have a very unique tone to them. Some weigh in around 9.5-10 pounds due to very small bodies, and lighter woods. They have a unique look that is absolutely unmatched. However if...

    anyone else noticed?

I'm a High School student without a job, though next summer I might get one. It took me over a year to save $1100 to buy my Kramer 350B for $800 plus $100 for case and new strings, luckily the Kramer 350B can depending on my fingerstyle plus tone knob, recreate the sounds of my favorite songs...

What Kind of Bass Guitar do you Play (Re-loaded)? BE SURE TO REVOTE!

Yeah, I never got why you'd need more than 6 string, and all I need is a fretted 4. If that's all the my Bass idols needed than its all that I need. I'm not dispariging 7+ strings, but I always thought it was just, more than I needed and I thought that most players 30-40% used 5+, at least on...

Gonna catch hate for this, but I am REALLY liking the Squier Affinity Jazz...

I own an Affinity Jazz, and I hate it. The action was literally a mile high! Close to an inch of the fingerboard. There was alot if buzz too for some reason. I would recomend buying a affinity replacement neck and buying a loaded J body,it would likely cost you around $200 plus shipping...

What do you guys think about the new Chowny Basses?

I just heard about this new company Chowny, they're a UK company with a MIC Semi-Hollow 31' bass. I don't think it's out yet, but if it is what do you guys think of it. Or what about new companies, I know I'm very happy to see new companies making basses around the world. Especially through...

    What's wrong with me - can't stop shopping :-)

Yeah, because I put my current Bass on Lay-a-way, not by my choice, my grades weren't great. The entire time from when I got home from the time I picked it up in the store I was worried I'd made the completely wrong choice, but when I got that Aluminum neck in my hands plugged it into my super...

My New Madness - The Black Star Jack project (mod build thread)

You could always add new knobs and switches for each pickup, maybe a preamp, or onboard fuzz switches! Maybe a EB esque mudbucker on the neck, maybe a Jazz pickup on the birdge. You could also find a bunch of the JC pickups and add like 6 or 7 like Derek Smalls' earth bass...

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

I'm considering a Walnut JB-62, I know finish and wood wise it's not like JPJ's bass, but if I can get a JPJs esque sound out of a '62 with my own (Walnut) touch. I really love the look and feel of Walnut on a bass, and the 1962 Zeppelin touch may be just what I need, although I don't feel 100%...

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

I'm pretty sure they Kramer aluminum necks weren't made by Kramer and are all the same, with exception for guitars and 8 and 12 string basses.

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

You could send that to a luthier and have him make a custom body for it, you could have a custom aluminum neck monster!

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

What about the JB62, Japanese Fender RI. I'm thinking I could get a good one used, does it fit the bill? Do you guys have any experience with MIJs? They're made for the non-USA market right? All I think I need, is maybe new pickups.

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

I think this is his '62, it's pretty early. He has a thumbrest did he eventually get rid of it or move it? Am I correct in assuming that the Neck is flat on the 60s bass, while the modern ones have a different shape?

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

What about the MIJ JB62? I think I could get a used one cheap... Though the MIM Standard I saw has dropped 20% in price. What are the differences between the MIM Standard and the '62. Just the truss rod adjustment cover right? Aesthetically I mean, obviously the pickups, and the guts etc. are...

I'm 20 min. Outside of Boston. Right now I bought a Kramer 350B but I also need a Bass to keep at my school to replace my Squier Affinity. I'm planning ahead. Yeah, used their about $400, which if I save up I can afford I still have a few hundred left from my last purchase, I'll sae up and see if a used one comes out, maybe a roadworn Jazz if I'm lucky.

He has stacked knobs in this photo? Weird. Anyways, I can't seem to find any MIM Jazz basses for less than $400 I'll check Guitar Center. So far it's been reverb and eBay. I think guitar center has some cheap ones.

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

Okay, how would I get a J with 60s positioning? Does a standard MIM J have it? I'd rather not spend the same amount of money on my secondary bass as my primary. So a new MIM 60s RI is out... Unless some used ones pop up.

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

Yeah, I don't think I can afford a 60s style unless it's used, of which I can't find any, incase none pop up, what's the difference between the 60s one and the standard?

Yeah, thanks again for the info, I'm certainly trying to go for the look, but for the sound I'm really just trying to get a JPJ esque sound if you know what I mean. I wanted to simply replace the affinity that I have at school, so I thought get something with the sound that I want, without...

Really? I've been looking and I can't seem to find alot MIMs for around that price, I'll look again, though. Do you guys know what mods I'd have to do to make it really a '62? Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

I use rounds on my Kramer, and my Affinity, I've actually only used flats once in a Music go round on a MIC Hofner, sounded awesome. Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

Okay thanks, I think I'll just grab a MIM Standard, I'm not even looking for this as my primary bass, just to use at school. What are the difference between the MIM Standard J and the 60s J bass? I would try to make it more like JPJs bass.
  38. thezerech

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

I don't think I'll ever sound like John Paul Jones. He said he played a '62 and I saw one photo of him recently with a stacked knob, I thought all '62 Jazz basses had the stacked knobs.

Could I make a John Paul Jones style bass out of a MIM J bass?

Thanks, I'll be on the lookout for a used one if I can. Should I mod the classic series, to have stacked knobs or did JPJ's '62 not have them? I've pictures of both.

The Blacktop Jazz bass, is a Jazz bass body with 2 split coils prescision pickups , I believe MIC, maybe MIJ or MIM. They're about $500 if I recall correctly.
