Can be done, though it's better to do this with a quick release (aka quick load) bridge, since you don't have to uncoil the entire string to remove it.

Brite Flats have a rougher texture than Pressurewounds, because they're ground down. Pressurewounds should do better. Side note, do you REALLY need to play with your thumb?

Wow, how the hell did they manage a 12 pound tension difference at the same gauge?

I have owned both 50-105 Chromes and 45-60-80-105 (custom medium) Precision Flats. The E-strings are actually the only ones with the same gauge in both sets, so it's the only one I can actually comment on. The stiffness is close, but the Precision Flat E is slightly less stiff.

So my GHS CM3050 finally delivered, and fresh out of the package they feel a good bit looser than I expected! Basically perfect, I'm glad I didn't try LaBella Low Tension Flats first. This is especially apparent on the E-string, which is the same gauge as the Chromes' E-string, but stills feels...

Might as well get pure nickel strings, they sound like that fresh out of the package and feel much nicer!

Depending on the output of the pickups, you could run passive controls.

Pickup manufacturers tend to be faithful to the time period they're referencing.

The trick is to look at the different parts separately. Amplifiers went from "dark, woofy and heavy" to "mid-scooped" and "super light", strings went from "I literally never changed the strings on this bass, I guess they're LaBella flatwounds" to "zingy roundwounds fresh out of the pack"...

Rotosounds die really fast for a lot of people. If you want a brightness that lasts for more than a few weeks, you should look into coated strings.

Geez, this thread is still alive! One thing that struck me about these: Because the overtones are a little subdued, they have a pretty aggressive high mid/treble range for new strings. i.e. the balance between overtones and noises is shifted a little towards noises. Kinda like old rounds, but...

There's a lot of confusion around that term for sure. For bass pickups, authentic vintage usually means a bright high end, but without the mid scoop that you often get with modern designs. Though that depends on the actual pickup type (e.g. Fender Jazz vs. whatever Gibson had in their basses)...

I figured it was something like that. Well, no harm done beyond having to wait three weeks for the Amazon shipment. Who knows, maybe certain large domestic online shops will update their catalogue if people ask about it a few more times ; )

The CM3050 set is STILL hard to find. There's a shop from France that sells it on Ebay, but it's actually cheaper to import them from the USA via Amazon. Or to have a local shop order it, if you can wait 2-3 months. Ridiculous!

I have been tuning this way for the majority of my bass playing life, and yes, I think in the actual pitch - and because I spend a lot of time in DAWs EQing myself, I don't even transpose an octave; the fact that D1 is 36.7Hz is fairly important for me. Really helps when you're pumping sub bass...

The Balanced Nickels are tuned to DGCF, and the flats would also be tuned DGCF. I use that tuning on all my basses. Long time lurker, first time poster ; ) I would probably do that, but I like balanced tension sets, and single strings are way to expensive in my country compared to normal sets...
